    3. It's an Fingerlakes Thing! "       A man in Topeka, Kansas, decided to write a book about churches around the       country.       He started by flying to San Francisco, and started working east from       there.   Going to a very large church, he began taking photographs and making       notes. He spotted a golden telephone on the vestibule wall and was       intrigued with a sign which read "$10,000 a minute."       Seeking out the pastor he asked about the phone. The pastor answered that       this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to Heaven and if he pays the       price he can talk directly to God. The man thanked the pastor and continued       on his way.       As he continued to visit churches in Seattle, Austin, Michigan, Chicago,       Milwaukee, and all around the United States, he found more phones, with the       same sign, and got the same answer from each pastor.       Finally, he arrived in Auburn, NY. Upon entering a church in the       middle of the Fingerlakes, behold, he saw the usual golden       telephone. But THIS time, the sign read "25 cents a minute"       Fascinated, he asked to talk to the pastor.       "Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church,       I have found this golden telephone and have been told it is a direct line       to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but, in the other churches the cost       was $10,000 a minute.   Your sign reads 25 cents a minute. Why is that?"       The pastor, smiling, replied, "Son, you're in the Fingerlakes now. This is       God's country...it's a local call."

    3. Can any body help me to find information about an Olive Damon who was married to a Truman Payne of W. Eaton, NY. They had a daughter names May A. who later married my grand father in Dec. on the 18th in 1890. He was born in Sangefield in Onieda Co. I am most interested in finding and getting confirmation for a second marriage of Olive some 12-15 years after the death of her first husband Truman, to a Mr. Sweet. He is said to have died and was buried in N. Brookfield cemetery about 1921 and that May was buried with him. I know that she isn't buried with her first husband. I am sorry that its not much to go on but this is about all I know. If any one can help please let me know. I would be so grateful. Also would like to know more about my great grandfather Hiram and the business of Carpentry that he was in before he was into printing. 3. Rikki, I am interested in what you might have about a Cyrus Beebe married to a Rhody Chesebro. about the 1700's. The following people are in this family. Cyrus, wife one Rhody Chesebro, second wife her sister Phebe, Palmer? Cyrus and Rhody had two children Cyrus Jr. and Judson. Judson is my ancestor. I think he was married to a Susan Blanding of that county. They lived in Brookfield,NY. Judson and Susan had three children among them Hiram J. He married the fifth daughter of Chloe M. Clark Hills and James Hills. They had three children William L. born in 1869? Lela Winifred and James H Beebe. William later was married to a May A. Payne of W. Eaton, NY daughter of Truman and Olive Damon Payne. Second wife of Wills was Anna Personeous. They married in 1925 this was after Hiram and his family moved in July of 1899 to Candor, NY William and his first wife May, had two children Susan born Aug. 20th in Earville 1894 and C. Arthur born May 6th, 1898 also in Earlville. They lived their childhood in Candor. Arthur is my father. Any thing you can find on these individuals would be just great. Also looking for confirmation as to who Cyrus ( who was married to Rhody) father was. Was his father Zadock or was it Stewart/Steward? this confirmation is of most importance because it determines which brother my ancestors descended from. If Zadock then the anancestryedescendsrom William son of Samuel and ? Keeney If from Stewart/Steward, then the line decdescendsom Jonathan also son of Samuel and ? Keeney. Any thing you can find would be great. Thank you in advance for your kindness. Joan Beebe Meddaugh formerly of Candor, NY Tioga, Co Now of Portland, Or

    3. Thanks, Bill; Cora Givens is listed on Seciton 2, lot 51.,,,,,on the same lot are: Bert R Givens, Anna B (Davidson)Givens (Bert is the brother of my great grandfather, Harrison Givens)........also on that lot is Harriet Givens, (their daughter), Warren Givens (their son) and Rose Givens (the wife of Warren)..............I can't figure out for the life of me, who Cora Givens is.............Rita & Ray Harris did a physical inventory of the Givens' for me back in April 2002.......this is what she wrote........... "The original mortality list was typed by my predecessor, using the hand written Mortality Records. Her work was the basis for my records which have been updated and corrected over the past ten years as we have surveyed the cemetery and re-checked old records. She had included in her typewritten pages a Cora Givens, date of death 11/4/58, in lot 51, section 2. However, we can find no monument for this Cora Givens, nor can we find her listed in the hand-written Mortality Records. Clearly, the information came from some source, although we do not know from where. We have included her name in the above list and in our official records and will continue to research this." I have contacted Brad Perkins, who has all the funeral records for Dryden, but he does not have a Cora Givens listed. 1. [NYFL] VR Lookup
    2. Hello, I am looking for a vital lookup of a Frederick Fowler born 1880? died before 1920. He was married to a Nora Pheilean date unknown. These two people had two boys. FREDERICK FOWLER AND NORA PHEILEAN FOWLER 1. Frederick Thomas Fowler b; 1900-1908 ? 2. Cornell A. Fowler b; June 18 1908-or 1909 Cornell is my father , I know on his SS# that it gives the names of his parents. I also know that he had an older brother named Frederick. Also they were sent to live with a relative, ( one on each parents side) Cornell ended up in Moravia NY. I don't know where the brother Frederick went to. I have been trying to find any birth or death record on the parents or the son FREDERICK and especially Cornell ( my dad) for 25 yrs. I do have a death. He died 4-2-1965 in Jefferson Co. Ny CORNELL A. FOWLER b; 6-18-1908 (he ) always said he was born in Utica, NY ( ONEIDA Co. )... They don't have a record of him there, but now I need to know if he was born in a town around there. Also for this same person, the 1920 census says he was born in NJ. I wrote to NJ and they do not have a birth for that person on that date in NJ. I do have a report card for Cornell in Moravia NY, and also the fact that he took my family there and showed them where he grew up. So I know that is his report card. I was also told that the father died on the Lusitania when the germans bombed it. But when I looked on the passenger list it showed a whole family of Fowlers and none of the names sounded familiar, I was under the impression that he went alone. This time frame matches when the boys were sent to live with relatives. I don't know what happened to the wife. It's funny because on my mothers side I have 6 generations back but I can't even find my fathers birth record or real evidence of his parents. I appreciate your help... Thank you Anne NC I can't thank you enough for this lookup. I live 650 miles away so it is hard for me to take the time to go there.

    1. [NYFL] Scrapbooks in Tompkins Co. Hist Soc collection
    2. Scrapbooks hold keys to unlocking county history By CAROL U. SISLER Special to The (Ithaca) Journal Jan 25, 2003 In the collection of the Tompkins County Museum are 440 scrapbooks; some are fragile, some are sturdy, and one is made of fabric. The oldest is an account book dated 1823 whose pages are covered with poems and news articles. Another is dated 1857 with newspaper clippings about Abraham Lincoln. Lacking access to books, I think people maintained these early scrapbooks with meaningful clippings so they could read them over and over. Toward the end of the 19th century, prominent Tompkins County residents clipped the newspapers and pasted the articles in their scrapbooks to use as a reference. For instance, J.W. Dwight's scrapbook dated around 1880 contains local articles and stories about his experiences in Dakota territory. He was a prominent resident of Dryden. Arthur G. Adams, Ithaca lawyer and father of the late Armand L. Adams, kept a scrapbook from 1897 to 1918 and George R. Williams, lawyer and businessman, saved clippings from 1877 to 1881. Composed of decorative cotton on which animal pictures were pasted, the fabric scrapbook was made for 2-year-old Priscilla C. Ogden, as a Christmas present in 1901. Other scrapbooks record pleasurable events such as Edward G. Wyckoff's 1896 trip to the Henley Regatta in England. Among the many Cornell scrapbooks is that of F.J. Knight, a member of the first class, which contains programs, class schedules and checks during his student years, 1869 to 1873. There are five scrapbooks containing ads, reviews and flyers from the Star Theater, dated 1908 to 1917. Eight scrapbooks contain wedding descriptions from 1899 to 1945 and nine include obituaries from 1857 to 1945. One of my favorites is the Pee Wee hockey record maintained by the late Clayton Smith because it contains a photograph of my son Steve, who played on the Mosquito level Blue Lions team in 1967. In 1935, the late J. Lawrence Smith, an Ithaca meat cutter and devoted Boy Scout leader, began a newspaper clipping scrapbook which continued until 1983 and included 64 books. In December 1989, I started clipping the newspapers for stories of local interest and my count is up to 25. As valuable as the scrapbooks are for the historical record, they were unusable for a researcher because they were not indexed. I began that task about 1990, slowly typing the article headline onto 3 x 5 index cards and placing them into logical topics like aviation, Ithaca Commons, Enfield, NYSEG, taxes, World War II. They now fill three drawers in the card index file and a fourth is needed. While the scrapbooks are a wonderful research source, they also provide a yearly record of what has happened in Tompkins County. For instance, a friend who was away during the 1980s caught up with the news by thumbing through the 1985, 1987, and 1989 scrapbooks. Recently, the county museum received funding from the New York State Library's discretionary grant program to preserve the scrapbooks by stabilizing them as needed and placing them in custom-designed boxes. But first -- what's in the unindexed scrapbooks? Volunteers are going through them page by page, noting on special reference sheets certificates, programs, photographs which should be added to the scrapbook index. Recently, Ithaca native John Perko found a photograph from about 1934 of his Cub Scout troop, which was sponsored by Beebe Chapel and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Everett Morse was chuckling as he recognized so many familiar names, and staff member Louise Matosich found herself in a photograph of Camp Fire Girls. These scrapbooks are real treasures. Carol U. Sisler is a local author and Board Advisor to the DeWitt Historical Society.
