For the person who inquired, here's my information on the Sheldons; at least my line (I'm the great-grandson of Harriet Hoffnagle Knowlton of Willsboro NY, descended from Johannes Melchior Hoffnagle, one of the first settlers of Willsboro) SHELDON FAMILY THRU HARRIET HOFFNAGLE KNOWLTON WILLIAM GODFREY SHELDON (BORN 1611 in Essex, England). William was with Gov. Endicott in Boston, MA Came to America in 1628 at age seventeen. Died in 1691 in Salem MA. JOHN SHELDON (born 1630, born and died in South Kingstown RI). Married Sarah _________in 1659. She was born in Narragansett RI; died in Kingstown. John was a founding father of the Colony Of Rhode Island and was a “Planter” before 1683 in South Kingston, RI. John & Sarah had: JOHN SHELDON (b. 1660-16 Jan. 1706. died in South Kingstown RI). Married Susan Cleremont in 1684. She died in South Kingstown. They had: ISAAC SHELDON (b. 1687-25 Aug 1752. Died in South Kingstown RI). Married Susanna Potter in 1708. She was born in 1688. They had: THOMAS SHELDON (b. 18 Feb. 1709 in South Kingston RI). Married Harriet Winters of Pawling NY, daughter of Andrew & Harriet (Wood) Withers. She died in Pawling NY. Thomas Sheldon was killed in the French & Indian War at the mouth of the Mohawk River in NY (1752?) They had: COL. JOSEPH SHELDON (B. 1743, died 27 Jan 1836 in Willsboro NY). Married Ruth Aiken (b: 17 Nov 1741 in Dartmouth MA. Died 4 May 1832 in Willsboro NY), daughter of Elisha Aiken and “Miss Tripp” of Dutchess County NY. Joseph Sheldon and Abraham Aiken were the first two settlers of Willsboro (Essex County) after the Revolution. They arrived by way of Lake George and Lake Champlain on the ice, and reached Boquet in March 1784. They took lots #2 and #3 of Gilliland’s survey. Fourteen other families arrived that Spring. Joseph and Ruth had: PHEBE SHELDON (b. 29 Sep. 1777 in Dutchess County NY; one of seven children). She died on 17 May 1860 in Willsboro NY. Phebe married JOHN HOFFNAGLE JR (son of John Hoffnagle and Lois Bradshaw). John was born in Dutchess County NY on 30 Aug 1795; he died on 12 July 1856 in Willsboro NY. Hon. John Hoffnagle was a member of the NY Assembly 1818-1820, and 1827. They had: JOSEPH HOFFNAGLE (b. 8 Mar 1798 in Willsboro NY. He died in Willsboro NY on 13 Oct 1890. He was one of ten children. On 1 Jan 1823 Joseph married Polly Burt Higby (b. 9 Oct 1803 in Fort Ann NY <?>). She was the daughter of Levi Higby & Chloe Cobb. Polly died on 13 Oct 1863 in Willsboro NY.
