My great grandfather, Thomas F. Witherbee of Port Henry, was a member of the 30th Pennsylvania Regimental Band and was about six miles from Gettysburg when that awful battle occurred. He had to go in afterward and help clean up the carnage. This is from a fascinating diary that he kept. Later he designed and managed Port Henry's Cedar Point Furnace and also founded the town's first band. He later went to Durango, Mexico to manage a mine there. He died in Durango and sadly is buried there rather than in the "Witherbee Circle" at Union Cemetery. BILL KNOWLTON
