In regards to John Brown--Elmer Eugene Barker in his book "Crown Point, New York In the Civil War" published 1961 says: "John Brown's fanatical raid against the Federal Arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in 1859, by which he intended to set in motion an uprising of slaves in the Southern states, and his execution, were shocking news in Crown Point. This community, nestled between Lake Champlainand the Adirondack Mountains, busy with its farming, mining, lumbering, and numerous small industries, suddenly found itself involved in national affairs. John Brown's project to establish a colony of freed slaves in the neighboring town of North Elba, and his leading example in the introduction of imporved livestock and better farming methods, were well known to Crown Pointers. Every farmer, lumberman, ironmaker, and their families felt affected in a personal way. It was almost as tho last rites were being paid to a neighbor when his body was brought home to molder in his grave while his soul went marching on"(Page 1).
