Unfortunately, the listings are by regiment or battery (for artillery) and are not indexed. These may be found at libraries throughout the state. Librarians are good people and your local librarian should be able to connect you with someone who holds these volumes. There are some errors, but few and minor that I've found. If an ancestor was an officer you may find info on him through the following link. The Vermont in the Civil War page is excellent. http://www.vermontcivilwar.org/index.shtml Finally, you can go to the National Archives (NARA) site and request look-up forms for their records. You'll be mailed these and have to fill them out (as much as you know) and send them back and wait. From what I've heard the wait is getting pretty long these days, but unless you live in Washington, DC it's easier than looking this up yourself. Please take the time to write or call the NYS governor, and senator and assemblyman of your choice to get them to do something to preserve the flags your ancestors carried in battle through the war.
