    3. I have the paperwork for my ggg-grandfather, as well. There were 3 documents: intent to become a naturalized citizen and a court declaration (both 1840), as well as the final agreement to support the Constitution in 1843. All of these were received from the Essex County Clerk, Court Street, Elizabethtown, New York 12932, (518) 873-6301 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sam Wait" <waitsc@rpi.edu> To: <NYESSEX-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 16, 2004 10:20 AM Subject: [NYE] Irish Immigrants > I was able to get a Naturalization Certificate for an ancestor in > 1855. 1. Neal, Neill, O'Neal, O'Neill surname In NY 1840-1860
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Neal, O'Neal, O'Neil, Neil, McNeal, etc., Westcott, Purdy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YRB.2ACE/1311 Message Board Post: My g-g-grandfather was born Sydney Eliphlet O'Neal on 10/02/1834 in "Lower Canada". His family left Canada for NY when Sydney "was an infant", (1840's?) Upon arrival to the states, Sydney Eliphlet O'Neal's name was changed to Sidney E. NEAL. The "O" was dropped and in the family records it is stated "The Queen can have it!" There is no record in the family bible of Sidney's parents or siblings, although I believe that "Eliphlet" (or a variation) may have been a family name. Sidney was supposedly in NY until about 1850's. He is known to be in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois in 1859, where a son was born (James Westcott Neal) . On the 1860 census for Jefferson County, IL, there is an "Elephant" Neal and wife Rachel, both from NY. Next door to them is a James Westcott an wife Talitha. I believe these families are connected and am trying to find information on them in NY. Any information on the possible parents or siblings of Sidney E. Neal is appreciated! Thank you.

It does indeed appear there were no lists or other records which the US Government maintained for those crossing the boarder during that time. The main source for tracking their travel seems to be ships manifests for Canadian ports and then whatever civil or church records are available for them on the US side. Eilis O'Hara

My 2nd great granfather Martin Doyle from Ireland had three children in Canada and then crossed the board and settled in Chesterfield, Essex County, New York around the same time period. The children were born in the early to mid 1840's and they came to the US around 1846-1848. I have yet to find any records of when, where or how they came from Canada to America. To my knowledge there are no records of board crossings for this period in time. Judy Doyle Turner
