    1. [NYE] Essex County in the Civil War
    2. Carl Johnson
    3. Sorry, folks, I'm probably way behind in reading these messages, but I know someone was looking for information on Civil War Units from Essex County. The entire book "The Military and Civil History of Essex County...." published 1869, is available at: http://cdl.library.cornell.edu/cgi-bin/moa/sgml/moa-idx?notisid=ANX1281 If you go to the index, you can find the names of the individual units, and then jump to the corresponding page. If you have never looked at Cornell's Making of America site, you have missed an amazing resource -- original texts with search capabilities. Try it out! -- Carl Johnson [email protected] http://home.nycap.rr.com/cjohnson Researching Peck, Johnson, Cath, Goodrich, Crisalle in Franklin, Essex, and Schenectady Counties, NY

    2. Amelia
    3. Posted on: Essex Co. NY Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Essex/11019 Surname: Burlingame ------------------------- I have an ancestor Joseph Burlingame who enlisted in the Civil War from Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. His enlistment papers fron 1862 state he is 44 years old, born in Essex Co, NY. It would make sense for him to be related to the family of Daniel and Elizabeth Burlingame, whose sons Joseph, James and John were born in the 1770s and spent part of their lives in Moriah, but I can't make the connection. I'd love it if anyone could help. My Joseph married Affa Rosencrantz in 1849 in Grant Co, WI, had 4 kids, bought land in Crawford Co, and enlisted in 1862. He was killed in the Battle of Baxter Creek in 1863.

    1. [NYE] More Civil War resources
    2. I like this discussion on local Essex Co., NY recruits of the Civil War-- For my own experiences, I have found some relatives who lived in the Wadhams area who joined Companys in Burlington, Vermont.... Also, please look at the Essex Republican, the local newspaper of the time; they often ran lists of individuals who were excused from service for one reason or another. My gr.grandfather was so listed in an Aug. 1863 issue. This newspaper is on microfilm at the Feinberg Library in Plattsburgh. Brian

    2. Cindy Foster
    3. I received this CD set last week. It has 55 CD's and is well worth the $49.00. You can search by name (wildcard searches too), birth year, birth place, gender, race, location in 1880, in any combination. Once you find who you're looking for, you can also view the residence around them. It has been a great tool for me. I've been able to find brothers John and Moses Foster, who were born in Essex Co. in the 1850s! 3. Posted on: Essex Co. NY Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Essex/11017 Surname: Tyler Skeels Tucker Chase Allen ------------------------- After the war the New York State Adjutant General published several volumes that list the names and service records of the men who volunteered for NYS regiments. Unfortunately, the listings are by regiment or battery (for artillery) and are not indexed. These may be found at libraries throughout the state. Librarians are good people and your local librarian should be able to connect you with someone who holds these volumes. There are some errors, but few and minor that I've found. If an ancestor was an officer you may find info on him through the following link. This also has some info on where the men from different regiments lived. http://www.morrisville.edu/library/local_history/sites/ For Franklin County men there is fine info through their rootsweb site http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyfrankl/military.html Lots of Adirondack families had kin in Vermont. The Vermont in the Civil War page is excellent. http://www.vermontcivilwar.org/index.shtml Finally, you can go to the National Archives (NARA) site and request look-up forms for their records. You'll be mailed these and have to fill them out (as much as you know) and send them back and wait. From what I've heard the wait is getting pretty long these days, but unless you live in Washington, DC it's easier than looking this up yourself. Please take the time to write or call the NYS governor, and senator and assemblyman of your choice to get them to do something to preserve the flags your ancestors carried in battle through the war. Right now they are rotting despite our high taxes and a budget surplus. -steve tyler-

NY Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/Essex/11005 Surname: BURKHART, BURKHARDT, BURCKHARDT, WILSON, STARBUCK, CORSCADDEN ------------------------- Wow! Rosina Elizabeth BURCKHARDT, wife of Thomas WILSON, was my great-grandaunt! They are buried at Federal Flats Cemetery in Minerva, as you may know. Her father (my great great grandfather), John George BURCKHARDT, died in Minerva in 1855. Her mother, Rosina Elizabeth Muller, died there in 1842. Her brothers were known as John George, Frederick Albert and Adolphus Gustavus BURKHART. I just came back from a pilgrimage of sorts to Minerva--took photos and gathered lots of info. The STARBUCK and CORSCADDEN connections to WILSON line were among the very things I attempted to research there, and I'd always hoped to find a living descendant of Rosina, as both Frederick and Adolphus died in the Civil War and never married. Eager to share info with you! Thanks!
