    1. [NYE] Hammondville / History of Essex County.
    2. Carl Johnson
    3. In fact, if you drive through Crown Point you'll see there is still a Hammond library. The references to Hammondville that I've seen conform to what Teresa LeClare said, that it was not much more than a tent town. A John Hammond of Crown Point was a captain and organizer of Company H of the 5th NY Cavalry, and his father, Charles F. Hammond, Esq., "advanced the funds for the purchase of all the original horses, amounting to one hundred and eight, supplied the company. These horses were selected with extreme care, in reference to their adaptedness to the service, and were probably superior to those of any troop in the army." Certainly enough wealth to accord with naming a hamlet. This from p. 258, "the Military and Civil History of the County of Essex, New York...." by Winslow Watson, 1869, which any Essex County researcher should read. It's available at Cornell's Making of America Website, at http://cdl.library.cornell.edu/cgi-bin/moa/moa-cgi?notisid=ANX1281 Viewable in scanned form OR IN TEXT! 3. I know this is an older topic but here is what I found out on a recient trip to Essex county: according to locals Hammondville was a minning town with in the town of Crown Point. it was located in the north wester section of Crown Point near the border of Scroon. Hammondville, not much more than a tent town was active from around 1885/1890 until the early part of the 1900 but was a ghost town by the 1930's. I hope this answers some questions. My paternal grandparents are Frederick Nelson Martin and Beatrice Mary Basiliere. My father was Nelson Alfred Martin. My paternal grandparents marriage certificate dated 9-Jan-1928 has my grandfather's parents listed as Nelson Martin and Adeline Soper. My paternal grandfather and both of his parents were born in Keeseville, NY. My great grandparents Nelson and Adeline are buried together in Burlington, VT and my grandfather is buried somewhere in Texas. My grandmother Beatrice Basiliere was born in Burlington, VT and is still alive in California. My great grandmother Adeline Soper was born @1871 in Keeseville, NY. I have the baptism record from Keeseville dated 5-Jun-1871. Her parents were Francois Xavier (Olliver, Oliver) Surprenant (Suprenant, Soper) and Esther Labounty, both born in Canada. According to my records, my great grandmother had a sister Mary born @1865 in Keeseville, NY. And for whatever reason there are two Adelines born to this family - one in 1862 and my great grandmother in 1871. Maybe the earlier Adeline died young and they reused the name. It's eerie but I've seen it done a lot. Is it a match?

You are following the same path as my cousins and I trying to figure out the same thing. My paternal line of descent goes from Quebec, Canada to Keeseville, NY to Burlington, VT as well. My paternal grandmother insists we're Mohawk and my uncle - my father's brother - remembers an Indian woman and visiting a reservation when he was young. My uncle thinks it was a relative of my paternal great grandmother Josephine Bergeron. My mother remembers my father having stories about the Indians, a reservation straddling a river and bootlegging between Canada and New York. My grandmother has Alzheimers, my uncle doesn't want to talk about it and I haven't seen my father in fifty years. And my cousins and I aren't finding any documentation to support what we're being told. My grandmother also told us that we won't because if you could get away with being French Canadian when you crossed from Canada into New York or Vermont, you did. They did it to avoid the prejudice and limitations they would deal with as Indians. I've gone through some rolls of microfilm to research the Keeseville, NY church records and have, on rare occasion, noticed a notation on the side of a record "mixed blood". That's as close as I've come to finding anything to support the possibility of Indian blood in any of these "French Canadian" families. I wish you well with your research.

    2. I was wondering if there was anyone on this list who could do a couple of lookups for me: My husband's gg grandfather was killed sometime after 1875 in the Crown Point area in a mining accident. His name was Joseph Richards and he was from England. His wife was Sarah Bennet/Bennett, also born in England. They had one son Joseph Richards born 1/29/1875 in Crown Point. Am interested in the death of his father and the birth of the son, if there are any records. Thanks so much for your help. Karen Cate Lyman, NH

Keeseville (On Main St. From the Sanburn Maps in the 1950s, it looks to be curved on the ends, which is quite rare for diners) The diner one mile North of Ausable Chasm. And the Black Bear in Pottersville. I realize the last two are outside Essex, but they're on the border... 2. mike engle
    3. Hello, I am doing research on Diners and Lunch Wagons. My general coverage area is upstate New York, but I would be interested in hear about any stories relating to diners from anywhere. I am looking for any information concerning diners of the past or the present. This would include stories from former customers, former owners, pictures or any other recollections. It is always great to place a diner with a family and/or with some of its customers, as this is what a diner is really about. So if your family used to own a diner or lunch wagon, you know of people who did, or you went to a diner as a kid in your hometown, I would love to hear from you.
