Marty, your request for help on cemetery law made the Franklin County rootsweb list. The New York State Department of State regulates cemeteries, and you can find significant resources online at http://www.dos.state.ny.us/cmty/cemetery.html. You will also find a contact number there that should be able to help you. -- Carl Johnson [email protected] http://home.nycap.rr.com/cjohnson Researching Peck, Johnson, Cath, Goodrich, Crisalle in Franklin, Essex, and Schenectady Counties, NY

An old family graveyard in the Town of Goshen NY has been desecrated by new owners. Three members of Orange County Genealogical Society went to the town board meeting on Dec 13th. The owners' attorney insists they did nothing illegal. The town attorney requested help from anyone who can provide him with contacts with other town boards/town attorneys in NY state where a law protecting private cemeteries is currently in effect. That is, he wants one or more legal precedents to use in formulation of a similar law in the Town of Goshen. Can you help? If so, please send name, address, phone number, e-mail, whatever you've got of contact people who can provide copies of >>>EXISTING<<< local ordinances that protect private cemeteries to me. I'll make sure they get to the right people. So that I don't get a flood of off-subject messages, please reply only if you can help the Goshen town attorney obtain COPIES of existing ordinances. Anything less than copies that can be cited as legal precedents will not help. Thanks and happy new year to all! Marty Irons Goshen NY --part1_31.205e4f3b.29652fec_boundary--

They were both born 9 Mar 1773 in Scituate, Providence County, RI, according to the"Jenks Family in America. Judd moved with his parents (James and Phebe Tripp Jenks) to Clarendon, Rutland County, VT in 1775, thence to Schroon Lake, Essex County, NY by 1805 when he was listed on the Schroon Road Tax list. He married Elizabeth Baker before 1798 when his son Cleveland was born. She was appointed executrix of Judd's will 21 Mar 182(5). The fourth digit is faint so I'm not entirely certain of the year. In any event, Judd died some time before that date. They had at least 4 children: Cleveland, b. 1798, m. Sally Goodnow Lucy Ann, b. 14 May 1816, d. 19 Feb 1905; she m. william Harrison Richardson Emoline, b 1818, d. 1894 never married Adaline b. 1822, d. 1901; m. Harvey Culver This info is pretty solid. I suspect that Judd Jenks is the husband of Elizabeth Baker. He is the only Jenks so far that I have found that fits all of the information I have on Elizabeth Baker. I know that Elizabeth married a Mr. Jenks and that they lived in Schroon Lake, Essex Co., NY. They supposedly had 1 son and 3 daughters. They may have had more children, but the source I had usually only listed the children who made it to adulthood and/or married. So far I have only found 3 maybe 4 girls. If I am correct, Judd Jenks was born 9 Mar 1773 in Gloucester, Providence, RI the s/o James Jenks and Phebe Tripp. He married around 1795 to Elizabeth "Betty" Baker born abt. 1774 in RI (prob. around Providence). They had at least Lucy Ann Jenks b. 14 May 1816 Schroon d. 19 Feb 1905. She was married to William Edward/Edward William Whitney. They also had a daughter Sarah Adaline Jenks b. 1822 d. 14 Aug 1901 who married Henry Culver. Another daughter was Emeline Jenks b. 1818 d. 6 Oct 1894 who I don't think ever married. I think that Judd Jenks died bet. 1821 and 1830 as Elizabeth and the girls are found in the census after that time and Judd is nowhere to be found. If you would like to contact me, feel free to do so at [email protected] I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
