    1. Thomas Crane - Buffalo - Died 1884
    2. Hello All - I've been trying to get some information on a Thomas Crane who owned a saloon in Buffalo in the early 1880's. He's present in the City Directories until 1885, when his wife Mary is listed instead. I figured that either he died or ran off with the barmaid sometime in 1884. Then I found a record on an LDS film "Cardfile of Death Records from News Clippings, 1812-1985" from Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society. The card merely says "Thomas Crane, Sept 29, 1884 Age 34". There's no citation for the source. I haven't done any previous research in Erie County (I'm trying to tie this Thomas Crane back to an Irish family in Oswego) so I'm hoping that I can benefit from everyone else's experience. Can anyone tell me how likely it is that there would be an actual death certificate or record with the City Clerk in Buffalo? What about a newspaper archives covering this period? I'm thinking that since he was only 34, perhaps his untimely demise was a newsworthy event, and would rate more than just a standard death notice. I'm in California, so I can't pop over there and check, and I confess, I'm getting a little weary of paying $20 a pop for "no record found" reports. Any help, comments, advice would be sincerely appreciated. Kathi ISBGGS New York - Thompson/Crane/Bramm/Fleischer Wisconsin - Meissner/Steng/Deim/Zeinninger

    3. Kathi: The Buffalo, NY newspapers are available via the inter-library loan program. Below is the link to the New York State Library program. Since you have the date you can request any newspaper microfilms available that cover that date and at least a week later. I would try these to start. Buffalo Morning Express Buffalo Evening News Buffalo Daily Courier Evening Republic http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/nysnp/ Your library should be able to order these films.
