In reading about Gowanda Hospital I do not see where this is the "hospital" that housed patients who had tuberculoses. . At the time, these patients were quarantined from the "outside" world the patients wrapped and placed outside in cold weather to help treat tuberculoses. This "hospital" was in the area of Gowanda. What place am I thinking about????? Thank you Angela
You are thinking of Perrysburg TB Sanitarium. It was located on Route 39 between Gowanda and Forestville. It is now closed of course and houses social service facilities of some sort or other. There was a hospital at Gowanda but it was for the mentally ill. While there was a hospital there the people who were able worked the gardens and grounds while under the care of the county. There is still a hospital in Gowanda but it is called Tri-County and serves the people of the area. The mental facility is now a prison facility of some sort. Hope this helps your dilemma. The campus in Perrysburg, Cattaraugus County became the site of J.N. Adam Developmental Center for people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. This became part of Western DDSO (developmental disabilities service office) when it merged with West Seneca Developmental Center. There may still be some offices for the DDSO there but I believe all the people served by J.N. Adam now live in group homes in the surrounding communities.
