    3. I'd Like To Thank Everyone Who Gave Me Input & Advice. I Know This Isnt The Typical Topic Relm Of This Mailing List But I've Been A Part Of This List For Years Now & Have Givin As Well As Recived Help Many Times. I Do Appreicate The Support. I Cant Afford A Lawyer So I Probably Wont Have Any Luck. I Did Send A Letter Asking Them To Remove My Database Compilation From Their Website. Here's A Sample Of The Listings From Their Site: LODER - Lily 1/3/84 reported death notices Buffalo NY SISSON - Marguerite (See PENHALLURICK) 12/12/96 death notices reported Buffalo NY 1/3/84 Is Actually 1884 NOT 1984 & Notice The Notation ( See PENHALLURICK ) That's Exactly How I Do Mine. The Paper Doesn't Always Have These Notes, I Add Them. In Other Areas I Have Added Other Known Surnames To Deceased Female Relatives That The Papers Didn't Know Of & Didn't Print. So I Am Quite Convinced They Have Copied All My Listings Over Multiple Web Pages i.e.: http://www.obits.cc/obit/154.html & http://www.obits.cc/obit/160.html And Many More. I Do Not Have Actual Death Notices Or Obituaries Listed On My Website. What I Have Is A 5,000 + Database Of Names Where People Can Email Me & Request A Scan Of The Notice Or Obit. I Never Charge Anything For This. My Biggest Fear Is This OBITS.cc Site Is Getting Requests Based On My Database Compilation Then Emailing Me Under Assumed Email Names To Request Scans So They Can Turn Around And Charge Their Requester A Fee. Since This Organization Is Certainly Not Local To Buffalo, I Cant Imagine It Would Be Easy For Them To Get Downtown To The Buffalo Central Library & Get Copies Of Death Notices From 1880! Now I Will Have To Think Over If I Want To Continue My Work On This Compilation, Leave It As Is Or Maybe Even Take The Site Down. At This Point I Am Uncertain. Thanks To All Of You Who Replyed Both On & Off List. Jan http://www.buffnet.net/~logic/

    3. I'm going to suggest something extraordinary that might put a stop to these people violating your copyright. Namely, charge people something for the service you perform. It is definitely a valuable service, and definitely worth something to someone who wanted an obit you had collected. You would not need to charge much to make this scheme end -- maybe $5 per obit would be fair. If somebody wrote you and told you they couldn't afford it, you could always waive the charge if you believed them. I have found that PayPal is an easy way to have people pay you on line, and the commission they charge is reasonable. If you don't feel right about charging for this, you might consider donating the proceeds to some Buffalo-area not-for-profit institution that has been helpful to you, such as the Buffalo Central Library. I don't know of any library anywhere that couldn't put a few dollars to good use in improving their genealogy collection or even staying open a few more hours a week. Ask them if you don't believe me! Unfortunately, there are plenty of unscrupulous people out there who are all too happy to take advantage of a person's generosity. Good luck!
