I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the GOULD Family of New York state. The first is a photograph of Gerritt GOULD which was taken at the O. A. Taft Studio in Buffalo, NY. The photograph was probably taken in the 1870's or 1880's with Gerritt appearing to be in his 30's or 40's at the time. Based on limited research I believe that this is a photograph of Gerritt GOULD the son of Merritt & Elvira C. GOULD who was living with his family in Holland, NY during the 1880 census. His father Merritt was listed as age 55, born in NY, a Farmer whose parents were born in NH and PA. His Mother, Elvira C. was age 43, born in NY, her parents born in NH and RI. Gerritt was listed as 23 years old at the time, born in NY as was a brother, Ray A. age 20, and a sister Arcielia age 12 years. The second is a photograph of George GOULD, taken at the Altenburg Studio, likely in the late 1890's or early 1900's with George appearing to be in his 60's at the time. There is no location indicated on this photograph. The photographs were recovered along with others including surnames, JACKSON, PARASI, WHEELER, REYNOLDS, ROBINSON, KIMBELL, SOHR, HAUGHTON, GWAIN, CLARK, and STEWART originating from studios in Buffalo, NY; Perry, NY; and Alexandria, MN. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to their rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
isnt there SOMEONE on the list that has a website who would add these to their site with all this info... that way more than ONE family member would have the info AND the buffalo NY collective will grow and grow.... Hi Shelley, How nice of you to rescue beautiful old photographs and return them to their rightful family. Although I'm not a family member, I've done some research into Holland and South Wales and have additional information on the GOULDs. Garrett GOULD was born apr 22, 1857 and is indeed the son of Merritt and Elvira KIMBALL. Garrett's brother Ray was born May 22, 1860 and their sister, Arscela was born Nov 3, 1867...all born in Holland. They had a sister, Best K, born sep 30, 1862 but she died sep 13 1870. Garrett married Elvira HAWLEY, born Jul 12, 1858; Ray married Nettie HAWLEY, born abt 1855; and Arscela married Ray JACKSON, born Jul 6 1865. Merritt GOULD was the son of Amos GOULD and Elizabeth (Betsy) FARRINGTON. Both the GOULD and FARRINGTON's were originally from Topsham, Orange co., VT.. A large number of families came from Orange county, VT and settled in Holland, Erie co., NY. The area they settled in was known as Vermont Hill. Hope this helps with your search for the right family.
