Nope, no printed index. There aren't too many volunteers who are eager to transcribe over 325,000 names (estimated county population at that time) from film. So it's up to a business like Ancestry to decide there's a profit to be made by doing it. --- zona.himmelsbach@juno.com wrote: > > There's also the 1892 census of Erie County -- Here are the > numbers > > to order > > microfilm for that: > > Buffalo, wards 1-4, 1892 FHL US/CAN Film > > 825692 Item 2 > > Buffalo, wards 5-12, 1892 FHL US/CAN Film > > 825693 Buffalo, wards 13-21, 1892 FHL US/CAN Film > > 825694 Buffalo, wards 22-25, 1892 FHL US/CAN Film > > 825695 Item 1 > > Has this film been transcribed and will it ever be available > online? > Zona > > > ==== NYERIE Mailing List ==== > To contact the List Administrator: Dick Rose <dtrose@cox.net> > See the Archived Messages at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ > > ============================== > Search Family and Local Histories for stories about your > family and the > areas they lived. Last week, I had two of these films in to read and for those of you interested in the possibilities of the 1892 State Census I''ve uploaded a scan of a copy of a page at: http://www.hollytimm.com/newyork/1892NYstatecensus.jpg This census two column format for enumeration was hard to scan to start with. The image shown is probably about average in ink intensity with a good few much lighter. It's much easier to search of course if you have an idea what ward (and district of that ward) they were in. I found nothing on my families on the first two reels but will proceed with the remaining films after a trip to Maine the next two weeks. http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/genealogy/nyscens.htm shows what state census schedules exist for which counties. Dick Halsey's page at http://www.frontiernet.net/~halsey1/ny/1892.htm sums it up by stating "This census was a giant step backwards. It is very difficult to tell where each family begins and there are no relationships given, etc." His page gives the questions asked and it wasn't many.
