Black Brook is about 20 miles west of Lake Champlain. They could have gone to the lake, somewhere near Port Kent, and found a boat southbound to the Champlain Canal. This connected to the Erie Canal at Waterford, NY, just north of Albany. The Erie Canal was the great migration route west, terminating in Buffalo, where one could find lake steamers west through the Great Lakes. There were very few rails in the mid 1840s.
