That sounds like a description of Providence Retreat, which was at that location for many years. I doubt that it was there as recently as 1988, though. The site is the present location of Sisters Hospital, which has certainly been there from before the birth of my daughter there in 1958. One of my great aunts died at Providence Retreat in 1924.
