I have never used a check to pay someone in Europe. If they will accept a credit card it is a far cheaper way. When I'm in Europe I use credit cards everywhere, or get euros from ATM machines, which are also everywhere. Your bank will also do a wire transfer if the archive will accept this. I have done this once to buy a bunch of books from a man in Strassburg, but my bnk fumbled the transaction, and I had to make up a shortfall by sending US bills in the mail!
