What I have found to be really helpful is the archived newspaper sites. I have downloaded certain articles pertaining to current events of that time and have attached them to genealogy documents in the form of a word document. As an example I had many relatives die in Cleveland due to a cholera outbreak. I then found several articles about this outbreak and have included them. The same with various political events.
