    3. These Johns had different mothers also. I found a relative who named all her daughter first name as Mary and then a different middle name. They were call the middle name at home but not on offical papers. About 5 of them, That is funny also. 3. A lot of girls were given the first name Mary... Especially if their family followed the Catholic faith..I have a family of Germans where all the boys were named Johann. They went by their middle names; George, Peter, Michael and so forth...But if you want a conundrum why would a surname be changed from Schulz to Wodrich or from Tessier to Casey...Sure makes life interesting.. 3. I haven't noticed the naming pattern on my German side but on my Irish side it was first son after the Grand father on father's side, second son after mother's father. side with the girls. My grandfather named his sons for 2 of his brothers William and Julius. The middle son wasn't named for his oldest brother Carl. 3. Mary, you made be giggle out loud. Since there hasn't been much activity on NYERIE, I've been enjoying everyone's little stories. I know we all have one or six! After my aunt died, my father and I were going through her photo's, we came across one that had on the back "John Karl's 1st wife". John Karl was my Dad's grandfather. Dad had a fit because no one told him Grandpa Karl was married twice. Thinking his only sister kept it from him. My Dad passed before I got into genealogy. That particular John Karl turned out to be his grandfather's uncle. Then I added four others. For me, the "name thing" is on the German French side, including those "ugh" middle names. But we sure get excited when we figure it out, don't we? Ruth At 12:55 PM 1/19/2010 -0500, you wrote: >All of my paternal grandfather's sisters were named Mary with different >middle names.
