    1. [NYERIE] name change
    2. Hello all - I am wondering if anyone can give me direction. My birth certificate does not have my name on it. Long story short, my mother wasn't married and was trying to protect, I'm assuming, my birth father. The only paperwork I have with his name on it is my Baptismal Certificate, but not my name. My mother gave me her maiden name but apparently changed it when I was very small. I don't know whether she went through the court, changed it on her own, or what? I am asking for help because without a valid birth certificate I cannot get a passport. I have written Albany, have been in contact with the county building on Franklin, and City Hall. All I get is my invalid birth certificate. I'm no longer living in Buffalo which makes it all the more difficult. Does anyone know where I'd start with the finding out about my name change and whether there is another birth certificate (after the name change) filed anywhere? You've all been an enormous help in the past with me locating my biological father's side of the family. Thanks to you I now have two sisters, a bunch of nieces, nephews, and cousins! Diane

    3. I'm wondering if you might find out by checking with the Surrogate Court. In Vermont it is called the Probate Court, but I think they are the same. 3. The judge would have had to sign an order to change the birth certificate also. This is often done when the registrar messes up the name really bad - it happened to my husband's uncles. They both had to go through channels to get it corrected. Also, there should be an affidavit you can fill out and have signed by people who were around when you were born. 3. It's a child's right to have a name and county of origin. Good luck and I will say a prayer for you. 3. Hello Diane. My mom was born in the early 1930's in another state. Because her parents divorced and her mom remarried when she was 5 she used her stepfather's name throughout her school years. Never ever used her "real" name. At age 18 her stepfather took her down to the courthouse and had her name legally changed. Legally changing your name, unless there was an adoption, does not change the name on your birth certificate. Even though she changed her name, her birth certificate still bears her birth name. Kinda like when you marry, your name doesn't change on your birth certificate. If the birth certificate you get doesn't have your name on it, you might consider that it is your correct name, but you never knew it. You might have to go to the courthouse and file for a name change for yourself. Just my two cents... What did you do to apply for social security? Donna

    2. My "birth" name, that is, my name on my birth certificate is my mother's maiden name. My "real" name, if you will :), is the name I've carried throughout my near whole life and it is my father's name. So, does this make it more or less complicated? I have no idea when my name became that of my father's but can only say I've had his name since before kindergarten. -----Original Message----- From: D.C. <kinshipmatters@twmi.rr.com> To: nyerie@rootsweb.com; dparker708@aol.com Sent: Fri, Feb 12, 2010 7:02 am Subject: Re: [NYERIE] name change Hello Diane.
