Pat- I copied Kevin's post below. He has a very good memory. My grandparents were Magicians also.(hartman) I don't know if they performed at Fork's, I have alot of their papers but nothing on Forks. But that is not say he didin't. I had been to Fork's a few times back in the 1970's and met many magicians that knew my grandfather. There was also a restaurant tavern named Quinn's on Military Rd on the Buffalo Kenmore border that also had magicians perform in the 1980's.That building is now gone. There is usually a tavern or restaurant soemwhere here that has magicians performing regularly. Just not sure who they would be now. I can email some Magician websites to you if you like. There is one particular one that wants bio's of the magicians. They are trying to preserve the early history of magicians. It is a very good and reputable site. I happened to find a empty bio abt my grandfather and contacted them and they were happy to have a short bio submitted. My grandfather invented several tricks as most magicians do. He built and sold one in particular.Siegfried and Roy even adapted it for their act (before the tiger accident). The Magician's groups are called Rings. They are a pretty private bunch. You can contact them and give them as much info as possible, you may not get an answer back, and then again you may.It would be helpful if you knew the Ring your grandparents belonged to. There is a magic shop on Elmwood Ave in Buffalo that might be able to put you in contact with some local magicians. Most of the guys my Grandfather knew are gone. My grandmother was the only female magician in Buffalo in 1932.I am considering writing a book abt her as she had a very interesting life and was the first woman to accomplish a feat in 1918. I would also post to ancestry.com, there is a specific "Magicians" category there. I had a cousin and a few others contact me thru that connection. I will advise you to compile as much info as possible before contacting Magician sources. I would also advise that you be careful as to what you do share! There is quite a "circuit" of conferences and shows where info is shared and sold. So you want the word out there, but there are alos people that want specifics to profit from.(and you won't) Start reading books abt magicians, there is alot to learn and you may find your family members mentioned. I did! I would also advise you to go to www.findagrave.com and post grave info abt your magician family. If you have no grave photos, you can ask a volunteer to take one. A very nice man recommended that and I ahv ebeen busy posting ever since! The magicians I have been dealing with have been very nice and very helpful. And preserve what papers and tricks you do have, those items from that era can/are be quite valuable!!!!!!! If I can help in anyway, please feel free to email me. Researching my grandparents has been very interesting, educational and rewarding. Laurie "Try posting somthing with title like Magician- Erie County. The Forks Hotel was torn down several years ago, after a fire and the new brick building on the site now houses the Cheektowaga Credit Union. Before my time, but I believe the area? was the site for collecting tolls on Batavia (Broadway) Road. Thus its fame. The Forks area is a "T" in the road, Broadway and Union Rd, with the Forks Vol. Fire Co., Cheektowaga Town Hall, Credit Union and railroad tracks. Only the Forks Hotel and the Forks Voluntary Fire Company hold the Forks name. Forks, New York is in the Town of Cheektowaga.

Is there a place where one could check to see if my grandfather would be listed. My grandfather was a magician and used to saw my grandmother in half as well as card and coin tricks. His name was "The Great Mysto" or similar. My Grandparents were Edward A Corney and Elsie Berry Corney. They also used to go to Canada, Around St. Catharines, Ont. I know they spent time in the summer around Lake George also. Many thanks Pat Corney
Forks is the name of an area in the Town of Cheektowaga, County of Erie. To my knowledge, Forks never existed as a government entity. It is the area at the intersection of Union Road (Route 277) and Broadway (Route 130). Town of Cheektowaga, hamlet or area at Broadway and Union. still exists as a fire district. Forks Volunteer Fire Company. Use to be an old folks home ( not PC) there and Forks Hotel which I think burned. Several on list mention a Magician owning the bar. I think his stage name might have been "SnowBall" but real name might have been Eddy ?? High density of Polish Americans in the area. Look at map of Cheektowaga in that area and you should be able to find the streets your relative lived on. You'll find old death notices listing Forks as where they lived and it might be referring to the Old Folks home. I remember the Forks Hotel from the 1950's thru the 1980's. I have been told it was demolished in recent years. I don't get over that way too much.If I remember correctly it was a mansard style building and wood construction. It was on Broadway, (south of Walden). There was a small connecting road from Union around the Hotel to Broadway. It would have been across the street from the current Cheektowaga Police Station. I can only imagine when it was demolished that the cards magicians tossed to the ceiling were still there. laurie
You are right about the magicians. I remember that and here is a link to a magician who performed there. http://www.parmapublishing.com/karlnorman.html Forks was centered on Broadway and Union and that's the intersection I believe the Forks Hotel was located. http://www.maplandia.com/united-states/new-york/erie-county/forks/ Kathy Nelson W. Hi, I am new to your list. Is anyone on this list researching a Charles White who was born in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, England in 1840? I believe that Charles was married twice - firstly to Alfreda (surname unknown) who was born in Canada, and secondly to Christine Schonthal (or similar) who was born in New York. He had families with both women. I have not been able to find an exact marriage date for either marriage. I also believe that Alfreda died sometime during the mid to late 1880's. Each census entry has him living in Buffalo City. Is anyone researching this family please? I am a descendant of Charles' elder brother, Alfred White. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in anticipation. Kate Brial Australia
I saw a story on WKBW-TV abt the project to restore the cemetery used for the patients at the Gowanda Pysch Center in Collins, NY. It is called Operation Dignity, I could not locate a website for the plans but found this article that mentions the project. The burials are currently just numbered metal posts and stones. The event will be held in the Olean Public Library and will include a public reading segment. Refreshments will be served. Members will also read from their annual poetry and prose anthology, “No Soul Shall Go Unnoticed.” The book is dedicated to Compfort. The title is drawn from a new project called “Operation Dignity” and refers to the Old Gowanda Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery, where 1,200 former patients were buried in graves marked only by small numbered headstones that were left untended when the hospital was closed. The introduction written by Faith Tanner Thrush, a group member who prepared the anthology, states, “For the lost and abandoned souls who were committed to state hospitals, locked away, forgotten by their families and society — we offer our voices so that their stories shall be heard.” Students and staff of the Randolph Academy and Children’s Home are working with the group to match the headstone numbers with patient names and to mark the cemetery with a memorial that will help visitors locate individual graves. County Mental Health Association Director Joann McAndrew said Operation Dignity will also raise funds to bring the Mental Health Bell from Alexandria, Va., to Olean. The bell was forged from old chains and shackles that restrained patients held in psychiatric hospitals across the nation. A small contingent from Randolph that has contributed poetry and artwork to the anthology is also expected to read, as are members of the Friendship Club of the county’s mental health association The event is funded by the New York State Council on the Arts. Subject: Add Your Names to the Virtual Surname Wall ----- Original Message ----- From: Paula Hinkel Sent: Monday, May 18, 2009 4:05 PM Subject: Add Your Names to the Virtual Surname Wall Have you heard about the Virtual Surname Wall project sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society? The Virtual Surname Wall is a free website where you can enter your surnames and can look for cousins. The Surname Wall project is free and open for use by all family historians and genealogists. You need not be a member of SCGS to participate. We are in the process of adding submissions to the file, and now is a great time to participate in this project. Your entries will be added to the system and be online within the next month. Access the Virtual Surname Wall at www.scgsgenealogy.com. Click on the Virtual Surname Wall icon on the right hand side of the page. To see if any of your surnames are listed: 1. Click on the link to "Search the Virtual Surname Wall." 2. Search by surname, location, or Submitter ID or any combination of the three. It is a "begins with" search. For example, if you search for the last name Mill, it will return the names beginning with the letters Mill. (i.e. Millan, Millard, Miller). 3. Be sure to read the search tips that are listed on the searchpage. If you haven't yet added your names to the database, or if you want to add more: 1. Have your family information available for reference. 2. Click on the link to "Add Your Surnames" 3. Enter the following information for each surname you are reporting: Surnames (including spelling variations). Geographic area in which they lived, or the migration path. List your geographic information in order by city, county, state and country. To avoid confusion, please do not use two-letter state abbreviations. Time Frame. Use abbreviations (approx., or abt., or ca.) to indicate approximate time frames. 4. Submit as many names as you want. If you run out of room, click on the "Add Your Surnames" again. If you get a message that the survey has already been completed, just click "Take the survey again" and continue adding names. You may add ancestors from any geographic location worldwide. As entries are added to the database, the Virtual Surname Wall will become an even more valuable resource for family historians and genealogy researchers. You will not immediately see new entries but will be notified when they have been added to the Virtual Surname Wall. Check back often to look for a match. Your participation in the Virtual Surname Wall project is completely voluntary. Your contact information is not displayed online. You have the option of asking SCGS to serve as intermediary, or authorizing SCGS to release your contact information in the event that we receive an inquiry regarding a possible family connection. Please feel free to forward this email to your cousins, friends, fellow genealogists or others who would be interested in the Virtual Surname Wall project. I am trying to find Regina Magdaline Glasser, born Dec. 26, 1836 in Buffalo, NY. Her mother, Regina, died in 1848 and I guess the family scattered. I found her father Matthias and brother William living with the older brother of William, John Glasser in 1850. Regina had an older sister Anna Maria married to Jacob Layer but Regina isn't living there either. I went through the whole 1850 census for Buffalo, Black Rock and can't find her. She would have been 13 or 14 years old in 1850. Any help would be greatly appreciated Jane Glaser
Hi, The 1891 census is located on the Pilot Site of Family Search. The 1891 is not complete and there is no index. You have to browse. Some counties are not listed yet in their database. http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?datestamp= 1192638854718 Since the address wraps around onto second line, you may have to copy and paste if just clicking on it doesn't work. Click on the map of North America and then scroll down to NY 1891 census. Have fun and hope you find lots of missing ancestors. It might even help narrow down time of death of parents or a child that you haven't been able to find in1900 census.
