To all you lovely American Listers, I know I've said it before. Thank you so much to everyone who has responded to my quest for help.... Please know that I really appreciate your help and advice... I will follow through all the guidance given to me over this and see what if anything I can find... It will properly take me sometime, if anyone comes up with any more suggestions it would be most appreciated. Regards John Clark
Dear Hilary, Many thanks for your suggestions, we have locally a Mormon Church, so I will speak to them. Also thank you for all the other information. Regards John Clark
To All You Lovely Listers, many thanks for all your suggestions, too many to reply individually but again thank you, once I've gone through everything & found out anything on my relative George Smith, I will let you all know. Regards John Clark PS My family name Clark comes from outside Christchurch, Dorset, at a place called Purewell. Some of the family stayed, some moved on to Weymouth, Dorset, & had children on the way. I'm from the ones who moved on, & then one moved up a bit, to Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Me I'm a Cheltonian but still a Clark.
On the LDS website, familysearch.org they are beginning to put the New York State census on line. They have the 1905, 1892 and a few others. They are nnot indexed and it helps if you know the ward they aare living in at the time of the census. Click on the tab that states, RECORD SEARCH. Under that you will find record search pilot, click on that and it is pretty self-explanatory. Hope this helps. If people emigrated from Ireland to Canada BUT the ship took them to Black Rock which is now part of Buffalo, would they have been included on any NY immigration data?? This would have been in 1840. If they immigrated to Black Rock, then immigrated to the US from there, I don't think any records exist. NY didn't start keeping border crossing records until 1895 or so. Before that, people just "came in". Dear John, Sorry for the previous blank message - I tried to include links, which i forgot this listserve doesn't like. If your ggf became a citizen around 1905, that was before the federal government standardized the process (and before the files would've been stored in our National Archives). This means he likely became a citizen in the local Buffalo city or Erie county court. The Mormons may have those records on microfilm - do you have access to the films on your side of the pond? They do have a duplicating service in which they'll make copies off microfilms for you, including sending index pages. I can email you the form directly if you want (no attachments allowed here). As for not being able to find him after 1930, you might check www dot fultonhistory dot com. They've scanned boodles of newspapers, and I found a probate notice for one of my own wayward relatives from Buffalo. Hilary Henkin California To find info about the films, go to www dot familysearch dot org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp . click on the link to search by place, and type in "Erie" and "New York". Click on the resulting link, then scroll down to Naturalization Records. Title Naturalization records, 1831-1906; index, 1831-ca.1930 Authors New York. Volumes are sometimes called libers. Records kept by the County Court, Superior Court, Court of Common Pleas. Great-grandfather George Smith (don't start laughing of surname) b. 10th Nov 1857 Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. Arrived New York 09th March. 1892. Going to Buffalo, Erie, which was written on ships manifest. Then as far as family back in England are concerned, never heard of again. Another record source to pursue is the New York State Censuses, taken in 10-year intervals: "Many of the New York State census records are available on microfilm from the LDS Family History Library and can be ordered at many local Family History Centers. New York State censuses are available for some counties for 1825, 1835, 1845 and 1855, and for most counties for 1865, 1875, 1892, 1905, 1915 and 1925. I looked on Ancestry.com, and they only had listed the southern part of NY State for naturalizations, so I didn't find him.
