Send for a copy of the original death certificate for Oliver, perhaps it has the name of the funeral home. 3. I had a little bit of a similar situation but with a first name. I was born in Western New York. My parents had settled on my given name, Janet Alice, then my dad changed jobs about a month before I was born and had a new colleague or boss named Janet. He didn't feel like having a baby around the house with the same name, so they named me Alice June instead. Then a few months later, they reverted to calling me Janet but they didn't change it legally. All my school records, and even my Social Security card, were in the name Janet except my birth certificate. It became a problem when I went to get my driver's license at age 16. We had a lawyer for another matter, so he submitted some paperwork, and it was changed pretty easily. After that, I had a birth certificate with the old name, and then the official name change papers from the state. Just last year, I tried to get a new official copy of my birth certificate, and I got a call from the Dept. of Health saying that my records had been "sealed". But I faxed them a copy of my old certificate and the name change paper and they sent me a new certificate with the NEW name, the first one I had ever gotten in that name. My point to all this is that you might have to get a lawyer to look into this for you, and if the name change wasn't done officially, to file papers with the state to make it all official. After that, you should be able to use the set of papers together to get your passport, and you might even be able to get a new birth certificate in the new name, like I did. Good luck. At age 18 her stepfather took her down to the courthouse and had her name legally changed. Legally changing your name, unless there was an adoption, does not change the name on your birth certificate. Even though she changed her name, her birth certificate still bears her birth name. Kinda like when you marry, your name doesn't change on your birth certificate. If the birth certificate you get doesn't have your name on it, you might consider that it is your correct name, but you never knew it. 2. My "birth" name, that is, my name on my birth certificate is my mother's maiden name. My "real" name, if you will :), is the name I've carried throughout my near whole life and it is my father's name. So, does this make it more or less complicated? I have no idea when my name became that of my father's but can only say I've had his name since before kindergarten. -----Original Message----- From: D.C. <kinshipmatters@twmi.rr.com> To: nyerie@rootsweb.com; dparker708@aol.com Sent: Fri, Feb 12, 2010 7:02 am Subject: Re: [NYERIE] name change Hello Diane. 3. The judge would have had to sign an order to change the birth certificate also. This is often done when the registrar messes up the name really bad - it happened to my husband's uncles. They both had to go through channels to get it corrected. Also, there should be an affidavit you can fill out and have signed by people who were around when you were born. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's with Mrs. PERCIVAL appearing to be in her 30's at the time it was taken. I am hoping to locate someone from this PERCIVAL Family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. Dad had a fit because no one told him Grandpa Karl was married twice. Thinking his only sister kept it from him. My Dad passed before I got into genealogy. 3. Mary, you made be giggle out loud. Since there hasn't been much activity on NYERIE, I've been enjoying everyone's little stories. I know we all have one or six! After my aunt died, my father and I were going through her photo's, we came across one that had on the back "John Karl's 1st wife". John Karl was my Dad's grandfather. Dad had a fit because no one told him Grandpa Karl was married twice. Thinking his only sister kept it from him. My Dad passed before I got into genealogy. That particular John Karl turned out to be his grandfather's uncle. Then I added four others. For me, the "name thing" is on the German French side, including those "ugh" middle names. But we sure get excited when we figure it out, don't we? Ruth At 12:55 PM 1/19/2010 -0500, you wrote: >All of my paternal grandfather's sisters were named Mary with different >middle names.
