My Himmelsbach family emigrated from France. to Erie County. Eva Heintz is my grandfather's grandmother. Where can I find Riedselz information. Thank you, Sheila. I'll keep that in mind. Diane
Diane, According to the Ancestry book "Concise Genealogical Dictionary" a chopper is "one who barters or exchanges, especially ecclesiastical benefices". Diane, If your search takes you towards Fredonia - you'll have crossed the county boundary from Erie Co to Chautauqua Co. There are wonderful genealogical resources for Chautauqua Co. Many cemeteries and old newspapers have been indexed. The indexes are published in books. You may be able to find someone on the Chautauqua Co mailing list who can go to the Fredonia, or Dunkirk public library and check the index books. Dunkirk was a significant city with a port on Lake Erie and there was a railroad that linked Chautauqua Co with New York city so many immigrants went to Chautauqua Co and then migrated north to Buffalo. Good luck with your search. Sheila sgtnysp@roadrunner.com wrote, On 2/21/2010 8:47 PM: > Diane, > The Catholic church in Evans is Most Precious Blood located in the village of Angola. Thanks, the first part could fit, I suppose, but not the second. I doubt there was much need for ecclesiastical benefices in 1850s western New York. Diane
The oldest RC church in Angola dates from 1871 only. There isn't one in Evans. Fredonia doesn't have any prior to 1899; Dunkirk - not before 1858. The above information is from the 1997 book "Celebrating God's life in us" The Catholic Diocese of Buffalo 1847-1997.
Thanks, Kevin. I've written St. Vincent de Paul Church in Evans, will see what they say. The Farleys reportedly also lived in Black Rock, so perhaps went to St. Patrick's for a time. A non-church-related question. The 1850 census lists Patrick's occupation as "chopping." (Nearest neighbors were a farmer, teacher, tanner, joiner, blacksmith, and two rakemakers.) Any ideas what a chopper did? Diane

Thanks for the Holy Cross tip, I'll check that out. Diane
Do you know if there was a Catholic church in Evans dating back to 1850, perhaps with a graveyard? Diane
Thanks so much, Kevin. I'll try those sites. No current Farleys likely to be relatives, as the family moved to Iowa. Diane
If Farley was Catholic he may be buried in Holy Cross Cemetary in Angola at the corner of Rte 20 and Main. Not sure how far back that cemetary goes. Diane, Black Rock is part of Buffalo but was at one time a seperate town. It's located abt 30 miles from Town of Evans. Evans won't have any records going back that far as birth, death, marriage records were not required until about 1882 and then not everyone got with the program. Try www.findagrave.com www.fultonhistory.com www.buffalonydeaths.com the Buffalo City directories of that time period would not have covered Evans The name Farley is still around Evans and Village of Angola. Mayor of Angola might be a Hub Farley. Check their websites. When Evans celebrated their 100 and 150 year marks; they put out booklets with history of Town and Angola did same when they reach 100 year mark. There are also two recent books put out by local authors that may mention Farley name. I think Cheryl Delano the town historian just published one. I have the books and live in Evans but I won't be back until April; so I can't look up anything for you. I'm new to this list and hoping to learn a bit more about my greatgreatgrandfather's brother Patrick Farley, who emigrated from Ireland in the late 1840s. Thanks you for the info. Mt. Olivet Cemetery confirmed that Oliver and Rose Potts are buried there. Rose's burial date also confirms that I had indeed found her death date and certificate number in the New York State index. Bob -------------------------------------------------- From: "M. Would anyone have access to records for Sardinia Cemetery? I'm interested in dates, a gravestone photo, obituary (anything!) for: Lillian G. DAWLEY, wife of Bert DAWLEY. Her maiden name was LOWE. He died 1935 at age of 63 according to findagrave.com entry but there is no photo. I have no death date for Lillian. Thanks for any help. Rich Lowe
Another possibility is St Paul's Roman Catholic Church at Victoria Blvd. and Delaware Avenue which is close to Argonne.
