Hi, gang, I finally outgrew Buffalo Freenet and have moved the Roots website over to my own website, BuffaloResearch.com. Here's the new address: http://www.buffaloresearch.com/roots.html Buffalo Roots: Genealogy & Family History in Buffalo, NY Plus, I added in Buffalo to the name to cut down on confusion between my site and RootsWeb, another venerable genealogical website. The search feature is not fully transferred yet but everything else should work. It still looks the same, though it is probably time for a facelift. Please change your links and bookmarks. Thanks! Next I will update my signature file! :) -=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=- Webmaster: Cynthia Van Ness, MLS -- roots AT bfn DOT org Roots: The Buffalo NY Genealogy Forum -- http://www.bfn.org/~roots With obits, vital records, city directories & hundreds of local links
Anne, that is exactly as I took it to mean, also. A friend of mine and I both have used the colloquialism "dicking around" meaning "puttering", messing, etc. After putting in "colloquialism" in a yahoo search (better than google) I've come up with some interesting websites. http://www.slangsite.com/ http://www.pseudodictionary.com/ z On Sun, 9 Jan 2005 19:11:40 -0500 "Anne Kruszka" <gen.witch@gmail.com> writes: > I took it to mean he would search liked a detective or a "dick" > would. As a relative of one that served in the service during WW11 you can write to the Records office in St. Louis and they will send you his complete records. I filed my discharge papers in Erie County when I got out of the service and that only gives you the Order of separation and copies of the Discharge. Just go to Records Federal and you can trace down the correct address. If I can be of further assistance just E Mail me. Good Luck _Utha@aol.com_ (mailto:Utha@aol.com)
Laurie, I found no offensive language , but I will do a study on the word you may be referring to. As for listing short replies, that seem to lead nowhere, just wait a few minutes while the other lister, finishes what he/she may be doing, collects their more fruitful thoughts and gives us something we need - like an url, address or fact. I do appreciate your concern. The list Administrator and other listers will keep us in check. Have a cup of lemon/honey/pekoe tea to relax. The world's problems will one day be still. God see us through it all. Zona, I have heard that separation papers were often filed in the county of residence for vets. The vets themselves filed them with the county clerk. My mother has told me that my father filed papers with the Niagara County Clerk when he was discharged from the Army after his service in WWII. I haven't checked with the office to see if they still have them though. Is the language I read in a certain reply to Zona necesary? I have enjoyed learning so much on this list. I think it is very nice the way family researchers help each other out. If someone doesn't have time or desire to help another researcher out, can't it be said more politely? I work fulltime but may be able to help you with some articles on a weekend depending on my schedule. Please let me know what a person would do to assist you and then I can get a clearer idea as to whether I can help you. I received this today and found it very interesting Unbelievable..... Subject: The Year of 1904 The year is 1904...One Hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some of the US statistics for 1904: The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years. Only 14 Percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars. There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st-most populous state in the union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents an hour. The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. took place at home. Ninety percent of all U.S. physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "sub-standard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason. The five leading causes of death in the U.S. were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars. 43 Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was 30. Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. One in 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." Eighteen percent of households in the U.S. had at least one full-time servant or domestic. There were only about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S. And I got this from someone else without typing it myself, and sent it to a dozen people in a matter of seconds! Just think what it will be like in another 100 years!...........It boggles the mind!
I think only the 1900-1930 censuses show street names and house numbers and then usually only in urban areas. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roots Webmaster" <roots@bfn.org> To: <NYERIE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 08, 2005 11:28 AM Subject: Re: [NYERIE] Census lookup - Buffalo 1930 > > Minor correction: the *digitized* censuses might not be searchable that > way. Minor correction: the *digitized* censuses might not be searchable that way. But the original manuscripts, as seen on microfilm, are indeed arranged in geographical order. That's what makes census microfilms a great source for people who are researching their houses. They need only know the address, not the occupants. Nevertheless, I thought you could browse them in the order that the pages appear on the film--for example, you can read a whole ward or town if you wish. Have Ancestry and Heritage Quest eliminated that feature?
