    3. On my Jewish side of the family I have hit a brick wall, then hit it several more times. My great, great grandmother, three sons and one daughter came to the US around 1891. Another daughter was born in NYC around 1892. The first time I see them in Buffalo is in the 1899 City Directory as COHEN. They are Russian Jews who lived on the East Side of Buffalo, in what was commonly called the Jefferson Shul. (Could be Russia, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, etc.) By around 1910 everyone had changed their name to MACON. Unfortunately, my Jewish side of the family did not talk much about their past to people like my father; they were very concerned about fitting in. I have found their burial plots by walking the Jewish cemeteries on Pine Ridge Heritage. I can tell by the cemetery which synagogue they possibly belonged to, however, cannot find a way to access any records or if any our even available. So, this is just a general plea for help. Seeing these ancestors are my surname-sake, I really want to discover their heritage. Can anyone offer any type of suggestion as to where to look next? Thanks Guy

    3. if you have used archives you will know that you can CONTROL+F and it will search the subjects on THREADED ARCHIVES presentations AND on INTERACTIVE SEARCHES so if you put your names in the subjects, and i would suggest family names as in husband+wife surnames then the populace can see your advertisement all the quicker.... if you use the INTERACTIVE SEARCH archives you know that the results are always less than desirable because of the limits on search composition....still there are results and that name in the subject all the easier to find... 3. Dear listers, I am researching the above couple. He was born in Scotland (Polmont) in 1783. She was born in Salem, NY in 1790. They married in 1807 in Granville, NY. By 1834 (or at least 1840) they were in Ashtabula, OH, but I believe they may have come through Erie County, and I'm trying to hook them up with other DICKs that might be in the area. They left northeastern NY/VT abt. 1826. They were in Chataqua County, NY 1827-1833. My husband is descended from their son, Matthew Grey DICK. For more details, see: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jss_pdb&id=I0956 Is anyone researching DICKs in Erie? I look forward to hearing from you... It is a merger of St John and Grace. Grace was located fairly close to the Niagara River and the canal, and your man's grandfather was a canal inspector. George

    3. Good morning everyone. I wrote in, last year, looking for information on a photographer named Gene Laverne. Thought I'd 'drop another line' just in case someone ran across something or someone new knows something. To recap. Gene Laverne was a very famous Glamour Photographer, who lived and worked in Buffalo for decades. He photographed many famous and not-so-famous entertainers. I found out, last year, that he had died in 1978. I am hoping that someone might know what happend to his photos/negatives. I am trying to obtain them for a lady who is collecting Burlesque memorabelia, for the Golden Days of Burlesque Historical Society. Info on the Society is at: http://www.burlesquehistory.com/ She plans to turn the collection over to a university for permanent preservation, in the future. I was able to get Gene's obituary and I spoke to the funeral director. So far, I have been unable to trace any heirs. As far as I know, Gene had no children. His sister's phone (the POC named in the funeral home bill) had been disconnected. I was told that his mother was buried at Concordia Cemetery, (as is some of my family) but they have no record of any burials, under any of the family names. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your help. Jeanette

    1. Birth date for John Van Buren Thayer
    2. I am searching for an exact birth date for my grandfather, John Van Buren Thayer.  He was born in Buffalo on Jan. 15 in either 1851 or 1852.  Information in his obituary and other NY Times articles make for the 1852 date, but in the 1860 census under his father Hiram P. Thayer he is 9 years old which would make his birth year 1851. As there are no Buffalo officially recorded birth dates until 20 or so years later, does anyone know what Episcopal churches might have been in existence in those years and could have a baptism date?  The other resource would be a newspaper birth announcement.
