I have a copy (in German) of my grandmother's birth certificate from 1900. The pastor's name is A. Goetz, and I think it reads E. Bethlehem Germcuide (sp?) in Buffalo, NY. The seal at the bottom reads "DEUTSCHE EV. BETHLEHEM GEMEINDE. Does anyone have any ideas what church this was and if so, where the records may be? I think that only means that you give up your right to sue them for publishing it, because you imply that you have no expectation of privacy when you submit your information to a public medium. Also that you give up the right to sue them(say, if they publish a book with or charge a membership fee to a web site for access to the information you provided them) for any portion of any profit they might make as a result of publishing the information you submitted. It doesn't mean that you yourself, Or anyone else for that matter, can't write a book with that information in it and make a profit from it or submit it on another website. This applies to deceased persons only. Information about living person belongs to the living person, or parent/guardian/legal Rep of a minor or incompetent person. I could be wrong, but I've been looking at the Public Health Laws concerning Vital Statistics... And for the most part, vital information of a deceased person is public information and no one person or entity has exclusive ownership rights to it As far as the "Not for Publication" stamp on a record, that would mean either it was stamped that way to prevent Vital stats from releasing the info to a newspaper, or that you cannot publish the official copy of the record, in order to prevent forgers from forging a birth or death record. Birth and death information of deceased is public information unless it is sealed by a judge. It's the official records, or copies of official records that are not public information. You may view or be told information about a deceased person, but you may only obtain an official copy of the record if you are family member or legal representative of that person. You may not view, be told, or publish vital information of a living person unless you are that living person or a parent/guardian/legal Rep.

Have a question - when a person submits thier family information to LDS and Broderbund they lose their power to have publication rights to their family history; is this true for GenCircles? In response to the query about GenCircles.....I have been Very impressed with the capabilities of this online database. Although the Gencircles database is smaller than WordlConnect at Rootsweb, the quality of the contributions seems better. Here's an overview: * Cliff Shaw is the founder of both GenCircles and Pearl Street Software, the publishers of Family Tree Legends. * Family Tree Legends software is integrated with GenCircles, but is not required (I personally use Family Tree Maker) * GenCircles is free and always will be. * You do NOT need to buy Family Tree Legends to use GenCircles. * They have committed not to use email addresses, put data on CD’s, and/or sending junk mail. Go to http://www.gencircles.com and enter one of your common family names. Surfing this site is a breeze and posting data is effortless. And SmartMatching searches for your family connections automatically. I love it when the computers do my hunting for me! Kate Denver, Colorado PS I am not affiliated with this company in any way! It might be for the same reason why there is a little box on a birth certificate application for New born's that you check or leave blank if you do or don't want the local paper to publish notice of your child's birth. I don't know if it's still done as general practice, but I know at one time, it was perfectly legal for local papers to be sent the birth information of all babies born in a week, and to publish that in the paper without the parents consent or even knowledge. It was still being done as late as 14 years ago when my daughter was born(had an issue with the paper publishing when I had checked that box for "Do not release birth information for publishing." So that's probably what that is. Amy

Z, There are probably 25 cemeteries in the Pine Hill section of Cheektowaga. Mt Calvary is the largest and owns/operated about 5 more. It's wall to wall cemeteries for abt 1 square mile. There are Jewish, Catholic and Lutheran, plus Polish, German/French etc. They are located between Pine Ridge Road and Harlem Road and Genesee St and Sugar Rd. I'd guess there are 150,000 or more people buried there. Cheektowaga is abt 32 square miles and Buffalo Int. Airport is located in Cheektowaga. Cheektowag means Place/Land of the the Crab Apple in Seneca language. Kevin
I looked at the website and found it interesting and found some info I could use regarding a couple of my family members. Kevin
On marriage records from 1889 & 1891 had been stamped 'NOT TO BE PUBLISHED' Why would this have been done back then? Was it a common practice?
Mary: Quite regularly "The Buffalo Courier" in 1888 and into 1889 published lists of the births, marriages and deaths, sometimes as often as every other day. The practice seemed to stop sometime in 1889/90 as I have not seen these lists in the 1891 newspapers. You will find transcriptions of some of these lists on the NewspaperAbstracts.com web site. Barbara (nee SCHALL) and Joseph HIMMELSBACH were buried in Cheektowaga, ERIE COUNTY. On their burial records stated the name of their church. I found the above ^ post in the rootsweb Erie Board (which I had posted in 2001). I'd lost all my research on Barbara SCHALL. So I was wondering what cemeteries are in Cheektowaga that they may be in. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Zona

Hi~ I just joined the list, and I was hoping for a little help with one of my brick walls. I'm currently researching the family of my husband's 3rd great aunt, Julia Cook (married names: Shepard, Frayer & Robinson). I have very little information on her first marriage, but according to the obituary of their son, Dale Hiawatha Shepard, Dale was born in Buffalo, Erie, New York. The obituary says that he was born in 1862, and other sources say he was born in 1859. The obituary lists his father as D. Shepard, and the marriage index entry lists him as A. E. (though some of the D's in those old records could easily be mistaken for As!). What I'm hoping for is that someone who has access to the Buffalo city directories for the time period from 1859 to 1862 (or even more before and after that time) could check and see if they were listed at all. I've been trying for a long time, and without much success, to find out his full name and to do more research on him since the only place I've ever seen him mentioned is the marriage index and the son's obituary. Julia remarried in Nov 1864 in Marshall county, Iowa, so D. (or A. E.) Shepard had either died or been divorced by that time. I suspect he may have been in the Civil War, but I have nothing to back that up either. Hopefully, this isn't too jumbled and confusing! If you have any questions, I would be happy to clarify anything here. Any help would be very greatly appreciated! Thanks, and take care! "-) Justina "-)
