In the 1970s there was a Lutheran Church of the Redeemer at West Ferry and Elmwood. It is now an office building. At that time the parsonage was located on West Delavan near Elmwood. Since Highland is the next street from West Ferry, this is probably the same church, but the entrance was on West Ferry. It was converted to offices after 1974. >From: George Richmond <grichmon@localnet.com> >Reply-To: NYERIE-L@rootsweb.com >To: NYERIE-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [NYERIE] Church Question >Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2005 23:05:31 -0500 > >>Hi All: >> >>Would anyone know which church Herman J. >Hi All: > >Would anyone know which church Herman J. Miller was pastor of in >Buffalo in 1916? > >I just received a copy of my Grandmother's Baptismal Certificate. >It had the Pastor, but there was no church listed. Johnna, In the 1916 Buffalo city directory, Rev. Herman F. Miller is listed as the pastor of the English Lutheran Vhurch of the Redeemer. His residence address is given as 68 Roehrer Ave. However, in the Church section of the directory the English Lutheran Church of the Redeemer is listed on Elmwood Ave corner of Highland, and with a different pastor. This address is several miles from Roehrer Ave. Also in the Church section, the Church of the Resurrection is listed at Genesee and Doat Sts., with Rev. Herman F. Miller as pastor. This address is quite close to Roehrer Ave. Mu conclusion is that the directory compiler got the church name wrong when he called at Rev. Miller's home, and that your Grandmothe was baptized at the Church of the Resurrection. Also you or someone read Rev. Miller's middle initial incorrectly. Any questions? George
Hi, gang, This is slightly off topic, for which I apologize in advance. Here's a way to have some pretty Buffalo pictures on your computer. See the Buffalo that your ancestors experienced. When I bought a new laptop last fall, I went out looking for a new screensaver for it. With the gazillions of free screensavers on the net, I figured there'd be a few with a Buffalo theme. No such luck. All I found were the Bills and buffalo, the animal. So I created one as a fundraiser for the Preservation Coalition of Erie County, of which I am the secretary of the board. It features a slide show of Buffalo cityscapes taken between 1900 an 1910. See: http://preserve.bfn.org/archives/screensaver/orderscreensaver.html All we ask is a donation of $5 to support our mission, which is: "...to encourage, assist and promote the preservation, protection and restoration of the built environment of Erie County, including architecturally significant buildings, structures, neighborhoods, parks, and vistas, for the cultural, physical, spiritual and economic benefit of the residents of Erie County and visitors." Or, more succinctly, the Preservation Coalition is the organization of last resort for endangered buildings in Buffalo. SInce 1981, we have been saving the buildings that your ancestors built and used. This message may be freely forwarded. Those of you with blogs or websites are invited to link to the screensaver. -=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=- Webmaster: Cynthia Van Ness, MLS -- roots AT bfn DOT org Buffalo Roots: Genealogy & Family History in Buffalo, NY http://www.buffaloresearch.com/roots.html
I can't do your look-up but I can clear up some misconceptions. Erie County was created in 1821, not 1920, from Niagara County. There is no known Erie County connection to Rhode Island. Hi all: As of February 10th the address for the newspaper articles has changed. Under each county below you will find the new address for that county. Over the last couple of weeks all the states and counties have been set up and about 1,000 articles moved to the new site. Canada and Ireland were finished about the first week of February. The remaining 13,000 or so articles will be moved as fast as possible. All the articles are accessible on the new site. The Erie, Niagara and Monroe Counties currently have all articles submitted since the 1st of February visible on the front page for each county. Other counties around NY State and the rest of the US are a mix of old and new articles. Starting this week I will be moving old articles from the archives to the new county pages for both Erie and Niagara Counties so the next few weeks will be a mix of old and new articles. Yes, but just think of all that extra time you'll have to do research because you're not waiting for pages to download!! The ultimate solution would be to set up your own personal website, perhaps for your genealogy. Not only could you post anything you wanted to (family trees, photos, stories of your pets), but you could have your email address be via the website <cindy@hofsearch.org> for example . . . oops.
Hi everyone, Great day! I've been looking in the Evangola, Eden, ya know, that area, for Murrays, Hammonds, and Odells. I've got Onesiphorus(Syphorus, Siphorus, Cephus, Ceferus, amongst other spellings I've found) Hammond in Eden. I've got all his children, all his wives, even that he was on the school board which stood on Bley right near the railroad tracks(schoolhouse still there, now a home). Lived 1795 to 1871. His marriages and Children are: Marriage 1: Betsy Scott. Children: King S. Hammond and Lydia(married Joel Valentine) Marriage 2: Lovina Tucker Children: Leroy(died infant), Mary Letizia(married Charles Cockle or Cockler), Lodosha/Laduski(married Charels Coon), Candace Marriah/Candice Merrier(married 1. William Murray 2. Spencer Odell) Marriage 3: Ann Eliza Page(Nee Tucker, Lovina's sister) No children. Siphorus died 22 months after marriage. What I can't find is two a few things. I've been to the Eden Historian and got very little in her records. She thinks Hammond Rd. MIGHT have been named for him, but she is not sure. I can't find where he is buried. There is supposed to quite a monument. But I can't find him in any online Eden cemetery lists. The other thing I can't find relates to his daughter, Candace Mariah Hammond my great great grandmother. She was first married to William Murray, of Buffalo, born in Scotland. Marriage date is unknown, but their son, Victor Henry was born in 1867. In 1860 she is living with Mom and Dad(listed as Daniel and Julia????) and sister Loduski in Eden. In 1870 Candace is living with her father(mom has died) and Victor in Eden. 1880 Candace is now remarried to Spencer Odell, and now has a daughter Daisey and is living in Collins. Daisey married Will Rogers. (not THEE Will Rogers, I don't think.) Thing is, I can't find either Candace Mariah or Spencer Odell after 1880. I can't find a Daisey Rogers that fits my Daisey Rogers. There was also supposed to be Three brothers Victor Henry Murray, Tom, Duke, and Edward. I don't know if they were Murray's or Odells, but no matter because I can't find any that fit my family anyway. One or all of these boys were supposed to become priests and go to Texas(which is odd because we are not Catholic and never were throughout history, I think the Hammonds were quakers or "quaker-ish") All of these boys were supposed to have been born in Eden also. But I can find no trace of them. William Murray is buried "at the cemetery at Shirley and 62 in N. Collins," from my grandmother's memory. But there are Three cemteries there, and only one is small enough to look through. The others have so many head stones that are unreadable..... Victor also was supposed to have been married to a Lufkin, a relation to the Lufkin Rule family, and married another time from which he had a daughter Lillian, but I can't find that either. These two marriages were before he married my great grandmother. I was hoping that anyone who is researching this area, if they ever come across anything that might fit, or if they themselves have this family in their line, if they could drop me a line? Thanks, Amy Lathrop
