    1. Cost of Death Certificate
    2. I was just on the City of Buffalo vital record fee page, put out by the State of NY. Am I reading it correctly that if I want a death record that is over 50 years old, it would cost $142? Am I missing something? The person died in Buffalo and I had planned to send for the death record. Susanne

    3. I just ordered some death certificates from the Vital Statistics office in Buffalo. If the person whose death certificate you want, has been dead at least fifty years, died in the city limits of Buffalo, and you know the exact date of death, you can send a money order for ten dollars with a written request giving your particulars. If a search is involved I am not sure of the fees... It helps if you can state a relationship to the deceased although it is not necessary. If you state that it is for genealogical purposes you will not need a certified copy. The cost is ten dollars per certificate. If you need more than one of course the cost is more. The service is fairly quick and I have not had a problem. If they didn't have a certificate on file they alerted me and also advised me if the fifty year limit had not been met. Good Luck... 3. some might consider this a profit making endeavor but i will say that those who participate in the publishing of their local histories consider them a wonderful resource and a wonderful means to promote local history.....and i have seen surname presentations as well....... here then a searchable site for books that have been published by arcadia publishing that have an emphasis on IMAGES of specific areas and subjects and family groups... You do not have to PURCHASE these items... I am certain they are available with interlibrary loan MOST ARE NOT indexed and run just over a 100 pages so here a search page: http://www.arcadiapublishing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SRCHM&Store_Code=arcadia<http://www.arcadiapublishing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SRCHM&Store_Code=arcadia> notice that there is a STATE search....as well as a keyword... NOW, i have found that if you do get a hit, that there is not a means to OPEN and SEE a more detailed description of the book by clicking DETAILS... so ,while on that page, slide down to the bottom and notice the search box FIND YOUR CITY... enter in a city name, and then see the visual display of what areas have been covered and secondary links to the specific areas.... (gee, even miles displayed from the city you entered... AGAIN, I am not promoting the business. I AM PROMOTING the INFORMATION THAT IS available and which you might not otherwise know about.... and after all, there is an isbn and interlibrary loan....

    3. so here is a search page: http://www.arcadiapublishing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?screen=SRCHM&Store_Code=arcadia I'll second this note. This website has some excellent books. Your own library will probably have any of these that relate to your area. If there is a problem with interlibrary loan in your area, use the isbn # and do a search at a bookseller website. Some of these offer a detailed description and/or sample pages you can see. Georgianne --------------------------------- Celebrate Yahoo!'s 10th Birthday! Yahoo! 3. i do believe it is time to write to your library board members and if YOUR GUY at the library is just A GUY at the library, then it is time to take it up a notch..... or go to a library across the line where they will likely honor your valid card... what i hear here, is passive resistance to doing a minimal amount of work.... and it appears too that there is need of a more responsive library staff and maybe even a board.. you did remind him of just how much of your taxes are going to the library for exactly this benefit... to have a library, not work with interlibary loans - that is if it is a recognized library - makes me question their OFFICE status as a library... seems that if it is a township library that you are in need of a trip to THE TOP township supervisor and if you are a county library, to the countyGUY, and if you are a village dropping in on the Mr Mayor might be just enough to budge... course, ifin you arent to willing to go to these people perhaps merely the MENTION of such a trip in your future will LIGHT a STINKIN fire under YOUR GUY.... 2. Carol Goodson
    3. ***this sounds very strange to me, since--if the borrowing library is willing to pay the price, items can be borrowed on ILL from anyone who is willing to lend them. When my library borrows, we get a better "deal" on loans from libraries in various consortial networks to which we belong, but if we choose to pay what is asked, we can borrow from anyone--it just won't be free. Maybe this is the problem: perhaps the library you are dealing with does not want to subsidize ILL requests, and has no policies in place for collecting from the requestor. I work in an academic library now, but have worked in public libraries before, and some do not really like to do ILLs, even though officially they offer the service. Interlibrary Loan can be fairly expensive and time-consuming, plus it requires specialized training. My only suggestion is to try offering to pay whatever it costs to borrow the microfilm, and see if you get a better response from them. I am sorry you are having so much trouble! /cfg At 10:07 AM 3/6/2005, you wrote: >Thanks for the advice - I didn't (as usual) make myself really clear. 3. You might contact the library/archives which has the records/films you want (directly or on their website), and get their procedures for fulfilling an inter-library loan request. Print these out, with any forms needed (fill in your own information on the forms), and GIVE them to your local library. Then "I don't know how to do this" doesn't hold water. I did this myself in getting microfilms from the Canadian National Archives, and it worked. In that case, the Archives has all the details and forms on their website, so I was able to fax the completed forms, instructions, and URL to my local librarian. Interlibrary loan is the right term for both services: requesting a photocopy of a specific article (for which you supply title, exact date, etc.) and requesting a specific reel of microfilm (such as two weeks of the Buffalo News).
