Okay... Zona has her Pluto; I have my Leonhard... Leonhard Schmidt is my brick wall (as well as my gr-gr-grandfather). I'd like to hook up with other researchers who are researching early Schmidts of Buffalo. Specifically, I'm looking for those of you who are researching Schmidts who settled in Buffalo by 1848. I very much want to find a family to link my Leonhard to. I am hoping he is the brother of one of your ancestors/ancestresses. His first recorded appearance in Buffalo (that I've found so far) is his 21 Nov 1848 marriage to Elisabetha Betz at St. Paul/St. Marks German United Evangelical Church. (Elisabetha I have down pat...) According to his death record, he was born 1 Feb 1818 in "Baden". Clues that may shed light on his family include: * one Friederich Schmidt deeds land in Buffalo in the 1840s to Leonhard's father-in-law, (Joh.) Henry Betz, Sr. [ Index of Deeds, Erie County, NY, p. 703] * In 1851, Leonhard Schmidt names his first son "Philipp Leonhard Schmidt" quite possibly (based on naming conventions) after his father (although the godparent to Philipp Leonhard Schmidt is Philipp Diener or Doerner, Elisabetha's brother-in-law). * Maria Schmidt is godparent to his Leonhard's daughter Maria in 1859. Might she be a sister or sister-in-law? * Leonhard's children's names (born between 1849 and 1858) are: Catharina, Philipp Leonhard, Phillippine, Heinrich, Carl and Maria. All but Carl and Maria and Leonhard are also given names that appear in his wife's family. Schmidt researchers in Buffalo? What say you? Thanks! -- Jillaine http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jillaine
Thank you for your suggestion, Sara. I called the cemetery and it worked! My grandfather who I never knew actually died on my birthday! Hi, I'm Donna (just getting home from the weekend and trying to catch up). I must thank you again now that I realize that it was YOU who suggested I call the cemetery in the first place! By the way, they were very nice and willing to help. They even checked to see if HIS father was in there for me!. Any ideas on where to go from here for an obit ? Hi, gang, I don't think anyone's written "Archives for Dummies" yet, but we have an excellent local alternative online. Many of you belong to organizations with a local history or genealogical mission. Or you belong to groups that are *making* local history as we speak. David, The Social Security Death Index (http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi) lists a Margaret J. Wall, b. 24 Jun 1906, d. 7 Jan 1992, SS# issued in New York, so it sounds like you have the correct death date, assuming this is her. Hi, gang, Just wanted to let you know that I'll be contributing to NYERIE out of my Yahoo email account from now on. In short, Buffalo Freenet (bfn.org) discontinued Telnet access to PINE email, which I really liked for being simple, fast-loading, virus-proof, and text-only (no unnecessary or icky graphics). Boy, they don't make email like they used to. :) If any of you have my old roots@bfn.org address in your address books, please delete it. Thanks a bunch! I am searching for the marriage of my Swedish great uncle. I have him living with his father in the 1900 census for Buffalo but didn't find him in the 1905 census. By 1910 the family was living in Cleveland, Ohio. I have reason to believe that Hans Eric Hansson born 1880 in Sweden whose name was anglicized to ''Edward Hugo Hanson'' married in Buffalo prior to 1905. Are there CD's that one can information from or other sources to help me? Sincerely GAIL in Ontario, Can -- Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. I have paid $10.00 for birth and death certificates, as recent as January. Buffalo City Hall Records Dept. does not take personal checks by mail, only money orders. And they always request a copy of driver's license with it and as stated in one fo the posts, your relationship to the indivdual. My cousin goes in person several times a year and pays cash, no ID required. Laurieg The Land of Oz, is on the horizon..... The site is NOT well worded(maybe on purpose). The cost to SEARCH, if and ONLY if you do NOT have an EXACT date is as below and includes the cost of the uncertified copy. If you have a Year, but not a date or month, you are subject only to the 1-3 years search cost. I don't know what the charge is if you have a year and a month but not a date. Probably no more than just the cost of the copy. The cost is not according to how long ago they died, but how many years of records the clerk has to search. 1 - 3 years $ 22.00 4 - 10 years $ 42.00 11 - 20 years $ 62.00 21 - 30 years $ 82.00 31 - 40 years $102.00 41 - 50 years $122.00 51 - 60 years $142.00 61 - 70 years $162.00 If you have an EXACT date, the uncertified copy will cost, and I may be outdated on this so don't quote me, to my memory, $12 dollars. When contacting them, you must state that it is for genealogical purposes, and what relation you are to the person you are searching. You may have to send a copy of your drivers license if you are sending for this info by mail I've always just gone down town, so I'm not sure what they want when it's requested in writing. Good luck in your search. Amy
No, there has to be a mistake, a typo or something. I'm not sure of the exact cost.... But I was in to for my 3rd great grandfather's who died sometime between 1893 and 1900. I did not have an exact date or year. The cost, which included the charge for the 7 year search and the charge for copy of the death certificate was $42 total. Absolutely not would it cost 100 and sum dollars, unless there were a lot of years to search, and I don't know if they will search at all, if you can't give them a time frame.
