    3. Hi Zon The people I am looking for are ANTON GATTIE & WALBURGAR GATTIE. I found them in the 1869 city directory and all it has for the address is Delevan Ave. I thought if I had the ward no. I could maybe find them on the 1870 census. Thanks Carol ----- Original Message ----- From: <zona.himmelsbach@juno.com> To: <NYERIE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 20, 2005 1:13 PM Subject: Re: [NYERIE] WARD NUMBER > Carol Give me the name of the person who is on the census. This census was organized by wards and election districts. To assist in finding a family, the FHC on Maple Road in Amherst has prepared a book relating street addresses in Buffalo to ward and district numbers. So you look up the family in the city directory to get the street address, then find the ward and district. You then have only a dozen or so census pages to scan to find your family. A few of the census takers were especially helpful. They wrote the street address on a line ahead of the list of those who lived there. George (whose grandfather successfully evaded the above procedure).

    3. I think that there are plenty of other projects scrapbooks, early obit indices, images and other such things that could be worked on instead of a census which we can read at our own leisure... I suspect that there are many items sitting in envelopes and boxes that sit there because there are not enough volunteers to do the job... and if you have not tried to do such an index, I do think that it would be a good exercise for you.... finding YOUR person on a page where you are EXPECTING to find the NAME is vastly different than reading and writing whatever you find.... a simple all name index of a scrapbook of typed documents could take weeks or months of a person's time.... and I do mean READ the census pages at your own leisure, not merely use an index... the older the census, the more chance you will find OTHER family members as part of the READ.... I personally think that the total dependency on an INDEX which is created by people reading a document that is VERY hard TO READ in the best of environments is NOT a good thing... have you checked the gen web to see if there are any of the townships read or if they are looking for a second reader/transcriber... if not, then to the usgenweb project with ya.... and see what is in the works there... ----- Original Message ----- From: zona.himmelsbach@juno.com<mailto:zona.himmelsbach@juno.com> To: NYERIE-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:NYERIE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 20, 2005 12:08 PM Subject: Re: [NYERIE] 1892 Census of Erie County Hi George! 3. Last week, I had two of these films in to read and for those of you interested in the possibilities of the 1892 State Census I''ve uploaded a scan of a copy of a page at: http://www.hollytimm.com/newyork/1892NYstatecensus.jpg This census two column format for enumeration was hard to scan to start with. The image shown is probably about average in ink intensity with a good few much lighter. It's much easier to search of course if you have an idea what ward (and district of that ward) they were in. I found nothing on my families on the first two reels but will proceed with the remaining films after a trip to Maine the next two weeks. http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/genealogy/nyscens.htm shows what state census schedules exist for which counties. Dick Halsey's page at http://www.frontiernet.net/~halsey1/ny/1892.htm sums it up by stating "This census was a giant step backwards. It is very difficult to tell where each family begins and there are no relationships given, etc." His page gives the questions asked and it wasn't many.
