    1. Institution in Kenmore 1900
    2. Hi, all. I was just looking for my BLEYLE relations in the US census from 1900 in Township Tonawanda, village Kenmore- ED #259. I was able to find them, but there was a something that caught my eye. Name of Institution: ? House. I could not make out the name before house. I am assuming that this may have been an orphanage as all the "inmates" as they are listed have "un" parentage and the birth dates were all late 1890's. No street name is listed on the census. Does anyone know anything about any orphanage located there in the turn of the century? Have a nice day. Christine

    1. Concordia Cemetery Overcomes IRS Hurdle
    2. Jillaine Smith
    3. [Thanks to Wayne Rettke for alerting me to this story... and thank goodness, eh? After all the work that's been done it would have been a shame to lose Concordia again...] For the full story from the Buffalo News, see: http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20050401/1028387.asp Here's an excerpt... IRS drops claim against cemetery By JAY REY News Staff Reporter 4/1/2005 An East Side cemetery trying to come back after scandal, neglect and abandonment has overcome another hurdle - the Internal Revenue Service. In December, the IRS notified the new board of directors at Concordia Cemetery on Walden Avenue that it owed the government more than $30,000 in back payroll taxes, fines and interest. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, with the help of Council President David A. Franczyk, spoke with the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service in Buffalo. They explained that the tax problems occurred under a previous board, when the cemetery fell victim to disrepair and theft by its former treasurer. The IRS agreed the new board wasn't responsible for the back taxes and dropped the case against the struggling cemetery, according to Clinton's press office. Paying back taxes and fines from the late 1990s and early 2000 would have devastated efforts to keep Concordia afloat, cemetery board members said. "Now we can concentrate on our volunteer efforts to bring Concordia Cemetery back to a place of beauty and serenity," said Diane Savatteri, a board member. 1. Re: [NYERIE] Census Naturalization Question
    2. Hilary Henkin
    3. I'd add that the Declaration of Intention and Petition for Naturalization are documents which can hold a greeat deal of genealogical information, depending on the date and court used. They're held by the court which process the naturalization or by the national Archives in that region, depending on date. The Declaration of Intention was the first document filed, and many people did not complete the process by filing the Petition for Naturalization. But even if an individual didn't become a citizen, he or she may have filed a Declaration. The third document, the Certificate of Citizenship, was the one given to the new citizen. Many people carefully saved these and passed them down to descendants. They contain very little genealogical information. BUT they do contain the Petition Number and which court processed the naturalization. If you have a copy of a certificate, you have the information needed to obtain the other two documents.
