    1. RE: GOULD Family Photographs
    2. Sally Jankowski
    3. Hi Shelley, How nice of you to rescue beautiful old photographs and return them to their rightful family. Although I'm not a family member, I've done some research into Holland and South Wales and have additional information on the GOULDs. Garrett GOULD was born apr 22, 1857 and is indeed the son of Merritt and Elvira KIMBALL. Garrett's brother Ray was born May 22, 1860 and their sister, Arscela was born Nov 3, 1867...all born in Holland. They had a sister, Best K, born sep 30, 1862 but she died sep 13 1870. Garrett married Elvira HAWLEY, born Jul 12, 1858; Ray married Nettie HAWLEY, born abt 1855; and Arscela married Ray JACKSON, born Jul 6 1865. Merritt GOULD was the son of Amos GOULD and Elizabeth (Betsy) FARRINGTON. Both the GOULD and FARRINGTON's were originally from Topsham, Orange co., VT.. A large number of families came from Orange county, VT and settled in Holland, Erie co., NY. The area they settled in was known as Vermont Hill. Hope this helps with your search for the right family. Good luck, Sally -----Original Message----- From: Shelley Cardiel [mailto:familia@sprintmail.com] Sent: Saturday, April 23, 2005 12:00 PM To: NYERIE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: GOULD Family Photographs I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the GOULD Family of New York state. The first is a photograph of Gerritt GOULD which was taken at the O. A. Taft Studio in Buffalo, NY. The photograph was probably taken in the 1870's or 1880's with Gerritt appearing to be in his 30's or 40's at the time. Based on limited research I believe that this is a photograph of Gerritt GOULD the son of Merritt & Elvira C. GOULD who was living with his family in Holland, NY during the 1880 census. His father Merritt was listed as age 55, born in NY, a Farmer whose parents were born in NH and PA. His Mother, Elvira C. was age 43, born in NY, her parents born in NH and RI. Gerritt was listed as 23 years old at the time, born in NY as was a brother, Ray A. age 20, and a sister Arcielia age 12 years. The second is a photograph of George GOULD, taken at the Altenburg Studio, likely in the late 1890's or early 1900's with George appearing to be in his 60's at the time. There is no location indicated on this photograph. The photographs were recovered along with others including surnames, JACKSON, PARASI, WHEELER, REYNOLDS, ROBINSON, KIMBELL, SOHR, HAUGHTON, GWAIN, CLARK, and STEWART originating from studios in Buffalo, NY; Perry, NY; and Alexandria, MN. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to their rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. Would SKS please look for Charles T. Strasser, master potter, living in Buffalo 1908 prior to his death in June 1908? His remains were sent to evansville IN where he is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. He was married to Laura Stoeckel. They took care of my mother Laura Strasser while her mother was recuperating from childbirth. Mother's parents were William C. and Cora E. Smith Strasser of Sebring OH. Laura Stoeckel moved to Granite City IL, married Charles Hall. Can't locate her after that. Was said to have a child Anna Marie Hall. Thanks in advance.

    3. a little hint to help you all in the future... when we write a name in a subject or in the text as so: Johannes(John)Euchner it will likely never be a match to anything that a future researcher will load into their query box.... what are the chances we will add the JOHN to the query...? and in this case, even if one were to enter any of the structures i example below, the post that made me think to write about this topic WOULD NOT BE CAUGHT... so i would suggest instead that you enter it as Johannes Euchner aka John Euchner aka John MIDDLEinitial EUCHNER so that when one queries in their search engines they would be able to use "Johannes Euchner " "John Euchner" "John MIDDLEinitial EUCHNER " go to the NYerie list archives for the entry and its info of this same day....

    1. city directory look up
    2. Hello, I am hopingif there is a kind soul in the Buffalo area that would do a lookup in the city directories for me? I am looking for a Michael O'ROURKE (no middle name) and I am trying to ascertain when he was in Buffalo. I believe I have found him the the 1910 census as a roomer living on Huron? (hard to read) Str., and his occupation is listed as book keeper. The census indicates he was naturalized in 1909 and I have sent for those records. I know he was married in 1915 in St. Louis, MO. I am hoping to find out when he first appears in the Buffalo directories (I believe he immigrated around 1900, contrary to what the census indicates, it says 1890) and to try and find out when he disappears from the directories, possible around 1913 or 1914. I know this is a lot to ask, but I am hoping someone out there will have a few minutes next time they are in the library to do this for me and just jot down the info, I can then order the appropriate films from the FHC. I live in Austin, TX and would be happy to return a favor. Thanks in advance! Lisa

My grandfather was born Jan. 15, either 1851 or 1852 and, according to the Buffalo Commercial Advertiser & Business Directory of 1859, his father Hiram P. Thayer's home address is given as 185 Franklin which I believe was in Ward 4 at that time. Unfortunately, Erie kept no birth records until 1870.
