As far as I know, such a list does not exist. The Adjutant General's Reports from circa 1906 list all the men from NY State who served in the Civil War, in order by regiment. In the 1990s, these 60-some volumes were indexed by surname, so you can finally look up a soldier by name and see what unit he was in. I don't think the AG's reports give the hometown of enlistees--I'll have to doublecheck. There are lists of what CW units were organized in what cities, but these are an unreliable indicator or a soldier's hometown. Many traveled to enlist somewhere other than home. For example, many Canadians crossed the border to enlist in Buffalo. It appears that the AG's reports for NY have been entered in this database: http://www.civilwardata.com/ Hope this helps! --- John Ozment <johnozment@hotmail.com> wrote: > > Two of my great, great-grandfathers were of an appropriate age > to POSSIBLY have served from Erie County during the Civil War: > (1) Anton "Anthony" Batt (1819-1896), and > (2) Christian "Christ" Le(a)brenz [Leverenz] (1828-1893). > > WHERE DO I FIND AN INDEX OF CIVIL WAR PARTICIPANTS > FROM ERIE COUNTY, EITHER ONLINE OR IN PRINT? > > Thank you! > > > > ==== NYERIE Mailing List ==== > To contact the List Administrator: Dick Rose <dtrose@cox.net> > See the Archived Messages at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ > > ============================== > Search Family and Local Histories for stories about your > family and the > areas they lived. John Ozment, Just an hour ago I was examining < http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/> having been linked there from the Allen County Library Newsletter. Try googling the New York State Civil War Database. The New York State Archives has an online index. You can then mailorder for more information for a small fee. Two of my great, great-grandfathers were of an appropriate age to POSSIBLY have served from Erie County during the Civil War: (1) Anton "Anthony" Batt (1819-1896), and (2) Christian "Christ" Le(a)brenz [Leverenz] (1828-1893). WHERE DO I FIND AN INDEX OF CIVIL WAR PARTICIPANTS FROM ERIE COUNTY, EITHER ONLINE OR IN PRINT? Thank you!

While I know that there was no federal census taken in 1865, was there a state one? Leslie (Bridges) Kohler
The quality of the film is pretty poor. It might not be an easy task to scan... Well, in Erie County there are several municipalities authorized to levy taxes, each with their own offices & procedures. For the County, try going right to the source and asking: http://www.erie.gov/depts/finance/ And let us know what you find out! --- ".... valentine53179" <valentine53179@hotmail.com> wrote: > has anyone been in contact with the assessors office regarding > images of home for tax purposes...? > and where some of these may be housed now if converted to > industrial/retail etc areas? > > I was fortunate in another state to have contact with the > assessor who had KEPT the old files and had images of the > homes from the WPA era where photogs were sent out to > photograph each PIN for the files and from thence images were > layered on top for a complete file record of changes... > > it was a rather nic present/gift to see what once was and to > have photocopies of exactly what my family lived in.... > > so, if you have had such an experience in NY ERIE, please let > the others know the particulars... Thanks again, I think this is the difference: in a frame house, the internal frame holds up the house. Thanks you all for your kind responses. Yes, I'm quite certain that it's "Frame," which I had tentatively rejected as a possibility, thinking that it would have been synonymous with "Plank." And also, this morning I found a transcription of a page from the 1875 census using "Frame" as a type as well as "Plank." Wonder how they differed (?) Thanks again, ~ Elsa in Allegany County, western Maryland
Maybe it's "Frame" house. CBS would be cement block and stucco. Kevin
For what it's worth, I was thinking down here in FL we might be able to use those "foam" houses, especially during hurricane season!
