    3. Little follow up I love this site, I spent one afternoon / evening going through all the memorial cards my mother had saved over the years and went through my records and entered all the information I had on family grave sites, and friends. I entered everything I knew so that down the line if others are doing research its all there for them. Matthew T. There is a site called findagrave.com On that site you can find the cemetery, enter gravestone photos and even provide a bio of the person. If memory serves there is an entry for Concordia on that site. Maybe we could all make it a project to add what we have on that site for starters. 2. Jillaine, I recently made a trip to WNY in April. I did have a chance to visit the cemetery and was a little sad to see the condition. My cousin and I had commented how we wished we lived closer so that we could volunteer to help. It is sad to see the toppled monuments. I am glad that there are people who live in the area and who care enough to volunteer their time. I live in NYC and really don't have a chance to visit WNY that often. I took 3 photos of my GRITZKE ancesters' monuments. Would it be possible to contribute them to the website or is it only for general photos of the cemetery? If so, how? I think my cousin took a few pictures of some other stones. I wrote down the information on a couple of other stones and could contribute that as well. Thanks for keeping up the website and updates! 1. Concordia Cemetery Update - Memorial Day & Volunteer Opportunities
    2. Jillaine Smith
    3. As the "caretaker" of the Concordia Cemetery web site, I have the following news to report from the Concordia Cemetery Association: The new volunteer season for Concordia Cemetery has begun... Those in the vicinity who care about the cemetery and the state of their ancestors' final resting place are encouraged to volunteer... Specifically, the Association seeks volunteers for their Saturday work groups which meet at the cemetery every Saturday at 9am until November. Address: 438 Walden @ Sycamore... There will be a Memorial Day service conducted at the cemetery on Monday May 30 at 11 am; all are welcome to attend. Dave Yearke attended last year's event and contributed some marvelous photos to the web site. I hope someone will attend this year and send me some updated photos to add to the web site. The CC Association has received New York State vandalism funds to support the restoration of toppled monuments; the restorations will begin in early June with an expected 60 monuments to be re-erected on repaired foundations by August! (I know that one of my ancestors has such a toppled monument...) This is a continuing project with hopes for more repairs in the upcoming years.. The Association is also seeking a grant to replace the missing wrought iron section signage and the large lichgate over the front drive. This will be slightly different from the original as it will swing open for truck access. The Association has already replaced the missing sections of fencing at the gate itself. The Association has also applied to the local United Way to be included in their Day of Caring Project which, if the application is successful, would provide 30 volunteers for a three hour blitz. With your continued interest and support, the all-volunteer Concordia Cemetery Association will continue to try and restore this place to a place of dignity. 3. Zona... thanks for catching my typo... The subject line originally said Margaret, but it should be MARTHA! I've changed it... Since my original post, I've learned that the Martha who married William Betz was Martha BUSCH. This particular Betz branch had a fondness for marrying siblings. By that I mean that the siblings William Betz and Tillie Betz married another set of siblings: Martha Busch and Arthur Busch! And the same thing happened a generation up... William's father's sister married William's mother's brother! %-} (Did you follow that?) Try making THAT work in an all-in-one family tree! ;-) --Jillaine http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jillaine

    3. Hi! Is there information on file somewhere about people who came to Erie County from Canada in the 1800s? I'm trying to locate information on the RISLEY or RISLAY family which is listed in the 1850 census at Black Rock but I can't find them after that. Julia Risley is the one that I am searching for information. She married George Waldo Durkee. I have her census information through 1890 at Harmony, Chautauqua County and then not again until 1900 in Minnesota. Thank you for your help! Trish Coos Bay, Oregon

    3. I cannot find this guy in 1920 anywhere, but he was at 34 Mulberry Street in 1910 and at 19 Madison Street (rear) in 1930. I have tried looking up his Madison neighbors in the 1920 census, but by 1930, there are mostly black families living on this block, and they appear to have been recent arrivals-- none of them are on this street in 1920. Could someone with access to a 1920 city directory please see if they can find William Betz so I can track down his census record? (In 1930 he was a press hand for a machine shop.) They should have four children by now (Dorothy, Catherine, Henrietta, Edith) but unfortunately Ancestry's 1920 search index is head-of-household only... Related request: does anyone have any family living on Madison in the 1920 census? I'm convinced that this family has to be somewhere in the neighborhood in 1920.... Many many thanks! -- Jillaine http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jillaine

If any of you have ancestors from rural Erie County who kept diaries, this one's for you. ===== Message: 1 Date: Sat, 21 May 2005 18:52:40 -0500 From: Written By Hand...Manuscript Americana P <peter.pehrson@writtenbyhand.com> Subject: [Genealib] QUERY: Cites for rural diaries? To: genealib@mailman.acomp.usf.edu Message-ID: <20050521235240.7C0B67C6C@sm4app04.siteprotect.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hello, Colleagues: For an upcoming Newberry Library (Chicago) Seminar, I seek assistance with citations to published or unpublished sources for my paper entitled, "Rural Diaries as Expressions of Personal Spirituality." Specifically, I am interested in how rural inhabitants (whether on farms or in small towns and villages), conveyed in diaries a sense of piety, reverence, and worship through labor, domestic activities, and other forms of interaction with their social and physical environments, which were often characterized by isolation and literal connections to the land and animals on which they survived. Rural plant and animal husbandry, architecture, crops, and domestic foodways are some ancillary topics. The periods covered are 17th- through 20th centuries, the geographical focus is North America, and the language limitation is English (works translated into English would apply). I'm not including in this examination the work of tract societies or missionaries to American Natives, or established, organized urban denominations. Rural Utopian societies are included. As an example, I am aware of the Oneida Society in upstate New York, as well as Shaker communities in New Lebanon, etc. and would like to know about published or unpublished personal writings from the inhabitants. All of this is with a particular focus on the individual. Citations for existing critical and scholarly examinations of the subject are also welcomed. I'm much obliged for any assistance.
