in chicago, and likely in other areas...flowers would be taken to the cemetery and a flower car cost extra money... so if there were no flowers there would be no need for a flower car.... "Flowers are gratefully declined." Only Buffalo newspapers have this quote in obituaries. Not seen in any other newspapers. What's with them saying that so flat out? Usually it's "In lieu of flowers, please donate to specific charity or charity of your choice." Sometimes to children's trust fund in case of mother or father dying early while children are still young. David Samuelsen

I just located my GGgrandparents. Unfortunately, the 1880 US Census provided just the first initial of my GGgrandfather. I'm hoping if anyone is at the Buffalo Erie County Library they would kindly check the Buffalo City Directory around the 1880 time period. MY GGgrandfather was identified as E. Stanton at 1011 Genesee St. The census also listed his wife, Emma and three children Francis, Flora and Emma. Many thanks, Cindy

Olcott is in Niagara County - last thing you come to going North on Rte 78 before running into Lake Ontario. I don't know where the cemetery is, but it must be right in the village - just ask someone once you get into the village. Rte 78 has an exit from the NY State thruway (I-90) just east of Buffalo - Olcott is about 30 miles north - through the city of Lockport - the county seat. Ned Schimminger
Some of the addresses on this list are for a contact person for the cemetery, not all are the cemetery location. > Hi, gang, > > Came across this while looking up other stuff. That's correct, which in a way increases the chances that an out-of-towner's request for records might actually get seen. I will amend the annotation for my link. *:-.,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,_,.-:**:-.,_,.-* Cynthia Van Ness, MLS, bettybarcode AT yahoo DOT com www.buffaloresearch.com "My heart is moved by all I cannot save: So much has been destroyed I have to cast my lot with those who, age after age, perversely, with no extraordinary power, reconstitute the world." -Adrienne Rich
Ellis Island opened in 1892; my ancestor came between 1895-1890. Are there any records available from the Castle Garden immigration station? Thanks! Amy
Hi all: All of the NY counties now have their articles on the new site. If you have not performed a search recently I suggest that you do so. A couple of tips: I suggest first that you use the specific county in which you are trying to find your prospect. After reviewing those articles then use "New York" in the drop down box. This will bring up articles from any county in the state with that name. If you have a surname that could be spelled several different ways you will have to try each one. You can also use a first name to search with by itself or with the surname. If still no results, you can try using a limited number of the first letters of the name. One point; be sure to use enough to make the search useful. ie. A search using "And" as in Anderson will return almost every article in the area being searched since the word "and" is in almost every article. Just remember that if your search turns up empty, it may be that the article is still waiting for someone to transcribe it. We can always use more volunteers and articles. Happy Hunting. It is NOT a complete list of all cemeteries in NY, but 55 or pages is pretty good. See: http://www.dos.state.ny.us/cmty/CemeteryList.HTM I will add the link to the Buffalo Roots pages.
