Peter Smith (my gg-grandfather) b. 1832 in Belgium (according to the 1860 census Ward 5 Buffalo), wife was Harriet Dewerele or Dewerle. Children in 1860 were Charles b. 1858 in Canada & Ellen b. 1860 in NY. I'm try to determine if the Francis Smith b. 1835 in Belgium also in Ward 5, and the Nicholas Smith b. 1830 Belgium in Ward 3, are his siblings. Also there is an Elizabeth Schmidt b. 1796 Belgium in Ward 5, and I think she will be there mother. In the 1850 census for Buffalo, ward 4, there is Elizabeth Schmidt b. abt. 1798 Germany, with sons: Nicholas age 18, Peter age 16, Francis age 13, Michael age 8 & John age 6. The first three were also listed as being born in Germany, and Michael & John in NY. In the 1870 census I find Nicholas and his family in Titusville, Crawford Co., PA., and in the 1880 census my Peter Smith family is in Bradford, McKean Co., PA. Not very far from Crawford Co. Any help on these families is very welcome, as I've been searching for over 10 years now for Peter's parents and siblings. I have buried both parents here in Michigan, and several aunts and uncles within a few years of each other, and the rule of the funeral homes and cemetaries here is that only 3 flower arrangements can go to the cemetary. The rest of the flowers you have to decide to have family members take from the funeral home, or allow them to give to organizations that use them at nursing homes, etc., or they just depose of them. Usually if flowers are declined the family would ask that a donation be made to a charity. That's why flowers are declined in many instances. Also some of the flowers are taken to the church and the remainder are left on the grave. Its not the best picture seeing your flowers thrown on top of the grave. Large families often have enough flowers from relatives and do not need any more. Several reasons for declining flowers. Jim
Now I'm even dumber. My grandson will love this. He sang with the Buffalo Chips while a student at SUNY at Buffalo. Grace
The new St. Stephens films are in the library of the Western New York Genealogical Society which is located in the Grosvenor (Special Collections) Room in the main branch of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library. These are the records that were filmed: St. Stephens Evangelical & Reformed Church [formerly at Peckham & Adams, Buffalo, now at 750 Wehrle Drive, Amherst, New York]. All of the available records of St. Stephens Church were filmed, however, a few years of marriage and death records are missing and their location is unknown. a.. 1. Baptisms 1853-1973 b.. 2. Deaths 1853 - 1901, 1904 - 1973 c.. 3. Marriages 1853 - 1898, 1904 - 1973 d.. 4. Confirmations 1853 - 1902, 1904 - 1973 See: http://www.wnygs.org/microfilm.html for more newly filmed church records that are now available at the same location. And there are more on their way. Subject: FYI: Fr. Marquette Gets a Blog Father Marquette (1637-1675) seems an unlikely blogger. But the Wisconsin Historical Society has converted the journal of his famous 1673 trip down the Mississippi with Louis Joliet into electronic form, and through the summer we'll stream it out every Tuesday and Friday. This week they leave a village of 3,000 Indians southwest of Green Bay, make the first recorded crossing of the Fox-Wisconsin portage, and start down the Wisconsin - - whose name was first put on paper in Marquette's journal 332 years ago this week. See the Mississippi Valley as it first appeared to European eyes. Eavesdrop on conversations with Indians who'd never seen white men. Encounter monsters that lurked under their fragile birchbark canoes, and bizarre petroglyphs that guarded ferocious whirlpools. See how the unarmed priest repulsed attacks by hostile warriors as he and Joliet became the first explorers to descend the Mississippi. Running commentary by WHS staff will try to pin-point their location, quote other contemporary accounts, explain archaic words and phrases, and offer insights that make reading the journal more fun. It's all free, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/diary/marquette_1673.asp<http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/diary/marquette_1673.asp>. There's even an RSS feed, so you can have each installment delivered automatically to your personal home page, or add it to a Web site you maintain for a class, club, or organization. Feel free to pass this note along to anyone who might like to know about it. If you'll be camping or canoeing in the Midwest this summer, come to wisconsinhistory.org and experience America's heartland in the words of the first Europeans who laid eyes on it. NOTE: -there is lots more on the site and not specific to wisconsin tho wisc is the basis... -for those of German ancestry, Wisconsin was (and still is) heavily populated by Germans..
I'm sorry I can't help you with this, but I just had to share how deep our ignorance can be on some topics. I just learned last week that "Buffalo gal won't you come out with me" referred to Buffalo, NY. I thought it was in reference to a Western theme. Dumb. Grace

Actually, if you Google on the phrase "flowers gratefully declined," you see that it appears in newspaper death notices from all over, not just Buffalo. --- Rachel <fullerfamilytree@yahoo.com> wrote: > I can see limiting the grave decorations if the deceased has > been buried for a while, some grave decorations can get out of > hand and would be hard for cemetery maintenance. I think that it is actually the family asking for a limit of flowers sent to the funeral home. An over-abundance of flower arrangements can be overwhelming.
