    3. How did Mary name her children? I have found sufficient patterns, especially from this time period, to provide clues to her siblings names. In the meantime, here are 1840 erie co., PAULs and 1850 Buffalo PAULs. The PAUL families of 1850 Buffalo, Erie Co., NY: Ward 4, Buffalo: Mathew Paul, 36, stage proprietor, b. Germany Catherin, 32, b. Germany Catherin, 9, b. NY [therefore emigrated by 1841] (there's a Mathew Paul, right age, in 1840 census, ward 5) Mary A., 7, b. NY Peter, 11 months, b. NY [census done on 22 Aug 1850] Ward 4, Buffalo: August Paul, 29, tanner, b. Germany, enumerated with Gottlob & Johanna Beper Ward 4, Buffalo: Christian Paul, 21, laborer, b. Germany Barbary, 20, f., b. Germany (living with them appears to the widow Gertrude Kinder, 40, with 3 children) Ward 5, Buffalo: Peter Paul, 27, butcher, b. Germany (living with a number of different-surnamed individuals, several of whom are butchers) Black Rock, Erie Co.: John Paul, 43, mason, b. Ger. Catherine, 38 Barbara, 15 Susan, 11 Margaret, 6, b. NY [therefore emig btw 1845-1849] PAULs in Erie Co., 1840 census: Colden, Erie Co: 1) Abigal Paul: 1m<5; 1f<5, 1f 10-15; 1f 30-40 (likely abigal) 2) David Paul, 1m 5-10; 1m 20-30; 1m 40-50; 1f 5-10; 1f 10-15; 1f 40-50 3) James A. Paul, 1m 20-30; 1f <5, 1f 5-10; 1f 20-30 Aurora, Erie Co.: 1) Abijah Paul, 1m 15-20; 1m40-50 (likely abijah), 1f 5010; 1f 10-14; 1f 40-50 2) Adams Paul, 1m 10-14; 1m 15-20; 2m 40-50; 1m 50-60; 1f 15-20 Holland, Erie Co.: 1) Jonathan Paul: 1m 20-30; 1m 50-60; 1f 40-50 2) (a few doors down from above): Zorrastor Paul: 1m <5; 1m 20-30; 1f <5; 1f 20-30 Buffalo, Ward 5: 1) Mathew Paul, 1m 20-30; 1f 20-30; living next door to (his father?): 2) Michael Paul, 1m 50-60 (him); 1f 50-60; 1f 15-20 1f 20-30 http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jillaine

    3. We are going to have to start with what is known. With Rachael, one of my most difficult ancestress because she died at age thirty-four in 1864, I have only the following U.S. records: An 1831 ship record for "Rosene Longfeld"--found in a book about New York arrivals at the Milwaukee Public Library; The 1850 census for Buffalo for "Regina Reibold" The 1860 census for Milwaukee for "Rachel Reibold" A marriage record in the St. Louis Catholic Church in Buffalo for "Regina" Langenfeld, daughter of Petri Langenfeld and Barbara Feite and Regina's husband, Martin Reibold; A baptism record for her daughter, Emma, in Lockport with "Rachel Langfeld" as the mother An 1864 death record for "Regina Reibold" in Milwaukee; Four marriage records--one for Elizabeth (mother, Rachel Reibold", two for Emma (one civil; one church; mother "Regina Reibold", both in Milwaukee), and one for Martin in La Crosse (mother misspelled as "Virgena")--these were three of her children. In 1870, probably to make a blended family or for some other reason, Rachael's husband listed his second wife as the mother of all of Rachael's children in a Wisconsin birth registry, which has since been memorialized online, wiping out my ggggrandmother's identity! In addition, there is no record I could find in which Rachael's youngest daughter, Sara, ever lists anyone but her stepmother as her mother--but Sara was born when Rachael was alive and Sara's stepmother still lived in Germany. Once Rachael's marriage record was found, we got her whole family. We were also able to track her brothers. So now, might we list the records you have for Maria Paul? Are there marriage records for her children? Where is she in the census reports? What is the last known religion? What are Maria's children's names? Are there witnesses to major events--such as baptisms? Both of Rachael's grandmothers turned out to be named "Elizabeth," exactly as the name of her first daughter. All of these things are clues. It took my five years to locate Rachael's place of origin and to get her extended family in place. So tell us all about Maria. 1. RE: [NYERIE] Questioning premises
    2. Anne Kruszka
    3. Exactly! I looked for years for Frank Simmet, son of Michael Simmet/Zimmeth and Catherine Eisenmann in Erie County for years. This year after my last trip to Buffalo, I put his name into ancestry as Frank Simmet, born in NY and came up with him in Michigan (which is where I am from) of all places. Remember, when you are using search engines, sometimes Less is Best! In other words, the less amount of information you plug into that search engine, sometimes you get more info, or what you are looking for. The other strategy of looking for people with similar surnames, is a great one. It can be very difficult to locate family members if you don't have a given name to search by, but it can also be very helpful, as given names are frequently switched around on census. Your Mary Paul can likely be indexed as Marie or Maria. Or for all you know she could be Mary Gertrude, and if you keep looking for Mary, you might not find her, but if she is German, it is likely you will find her under Gertrude. Since both the French and German frequently name children in this manner (i.e. Marie Catherine, Marie Anne, Marie Gertrude or Johan Friedrich Victor, Johan Friedrich Georg, Johan Friedrich Gerhard) looking for just that first given name may get you nowhere. Above all, be open to possibilities. I occasionally see a stubborn refusal to do this in my library patrons. Often they are the same patrons who are frustrated that they haven't found Great-great-great-whoever and tell me long stories of all the years and places they've looked for him or her with no success. Sometimes it seems like they have become more satisfied by *not* finding that elusive ancestor, because otherwise they might have to own up to flawed research efforts or strategies. I can confess to the same weakness. I was looking for a prominent Newport, RI African-American family in the 1870 RI census to no avail, so I posted to some relevant Rootsweb bulletin boards. Someone quickly found the family in Washington, DC, because they weren't as stuck on Newport as I was. I should have been smart enough to cast a bigger geographic net, because I had already collected enough clues about this family to suggest looking elsewhere. 3. Thank you Cheryl, I have no idea what Mary/Maries' parents were named. She married Martin Halter. That family was from the Lancaster, NY area and went to St Mary's of the Hill. No records of their marriage there. He was listed as 18 and working for Charles Day in 1850. They were both found in 1860 in Houghton, MI. Census was taken before their son Andrew was born in 1860. There after they are on the Ontonagon, MI census records until all their deaths. Grace

    3. Dianne's idea seems sound. Is PAUL her maiden name? If so, maybe you could find her parents on the index of New York passengers for 1820-1846. Here is the reference: Index to passenger lists of vessels arriving at New York, 1820-1846 : National Archives microfilm publications, pamphlet accompanying microcopy no. 261 Available at NARA (I've seen it at the New York City office -- it may be at other branches) Also available at the Family History Library: 973 J53m no. 261 - FHL US/CAN Book - Available 973 J53m no. 261-267 - FHL US/CAN - Available It is also on 103 rolls of microfilm at the FHL. I don't have the film notes handy, so I can't tell you which roll you need to order. I have one note from a cousin--no longer mentally capable to tell me anything--that her parents lived the rest of their lives in Erie Co. Not much help. I am almost sure that she was of German descent, and her parents were most likely from there, but I have no idea what ship they would have come over on, or when. I have tried a lot of cousins, and they know less than I do. I have visited her grave, and the library and historical society in the town she lived in for many years, and they had no information on her. I am intrigued with your idea--but how would I go about finding a ships name? I am open to any ideas. Grace

He didn't have a birth certificate and used them as proof of his age. When they moved from New York to California in about 1928, he took a copy down to the Los Angeles County Clerk and had them recorded. The copy that I have has the record number on it. My dad says that's sometimes what people did with important papers to safeguard them in those days. You can still do it today - the county clerk will record any documents that you want for a fee Ditto what George said. My father did the same and on the back of his discharge is similar info that later appeared on the DD 214 forms. I thought I saw those records down in the basement of the courthouse where the immigration/naturalization index cards were housed, which was open to public searches. I think county hall has records of some military >discharges and not much more. I can confirm the above. My own military discharge is on file at the Erie County Clerk's office, but only because I brought it in and asked them to add it to their records, way back in 1946. This was done as a precaution in case proof of service was ever needed.
