    1. Re: [NYERIE] Look-up please, Helmuth, NY
    2. Cynthia Van Ness
    3. I've never heard of Helmuth, NY, so I looked it up all over the place, didn't find it in print or online sources, and won't bore you with the details. Then I looked at Webster's New Geographic Dictionary (1988), where Helmuth is a cross reference to Gowanda, which housed the State Homeopathic Hospital. 1. One reason you might not find your ancestors in records.
    2. Amy Lathrop
    3. Hello, list! This will probably not apply to an awful lot of people, especially here in the Northern part of the country, but it may be of some use to some, it was for me. If you have colonial and revolutionary/federal period ancestry, are having a hard time tracking your family line before 1850, but have come across someone who, at first appears to be a relative but you find they are listed as "Free Persons of Color" or "FPC" or anything similar, Don't count them out just yet. They most certainly could be your ancestors, but were "Melungeon", Elvis was Melungeon, and possible Abe Lincoln. Here is one website out of many that explains it. http://webpages.charter.net/pipercasey/melungeon.htm I thought my entire ancestry in the US was Anglo/European. Scottish, English, German, Dutch, all colonial New England. So, when I came across records that suggested non-Anglo, I counted them out. But after discovering this, I found out differently. I am very naturally blonde, very white(I burn, never tan) with blue eyes. Just a suggestion I thought might be useful to someone. Thanks, Amy Lathrop

    2. Sara Burkholder
    3. Pat, If Robert STOHR died at Helmuth,NY it was probably a good indication that he was a resident at the Erie County Home for those who were mentally incompetent or otherwise needy. The home is no longer in operation it is now a minimum security residence. If he had family that saw to his burial you may come across an obituary in Buffalo or Gowanda which was the nearest town. Otherwise he may have been buried quietly in the institution's cemetery. A death certificate may be on file in Collins, New York. I had an address for the office but figuring I would no longer need it threw it out. Good luck with your search... 3. I have a relative, George Jameson, who died in Buffalo on January 25, 1930. His death certificate says he was buried in the Buffalo Cemetery on January 28, 1930. George also had a wife named Louise who may have been buried in the same cemetery. Are there records online of folks buried in this cemetery? If not, is there a way to request information from the cemetery regarding these two people? Thanks in advance for any information you' all may have. Mike Palozzi
