    3. I loved your ideas of giving Auntie the photo album to help trigger memories, and of watching the tape later and thinking of further questions - pity you apparently didn't get the chance. It's true that a family history comes alive with biographies and memories of our recent ancestors. Also true that if you ask Granny a bare question she may claim not to remember the answer, but if you spend the time and let her reminisce in her own way, interjecting the odd leading question for clarification, you get a lot of valuable information. So write down those stories your Granny told you when they pop into your head - and don't forget your own! 1. [NYERIE] Woodrow Wilson School, Sloan
    2. Linda Schmidt
    3. hi - wondering if any other readers in this list attended Woodrow Wilson School in Sloan? My family lived in an apartment over my grandparents' home, on Gierlach Street- they were Fred and Bertha Schlicht; my parents were Robert and Helen Conpenelis. I was a student there through the middle of 3rd grade, before we moved to the suburbs of Depew, a *new* area at that time period (late '50s) Would enjoy hearing any memories from others from the school, or from Sloan- the school was at the corner, of Halstead Street- In kindergarten, 1954-1955, there were two teachers that I had: Mrs Heart and Mrs Divine - they were wonderful (as ALL kindergarten teachers are!) My favorite teacher was Mrs O'Neil in 2nd grade - and I have a class photo - if anyone else reading this attended, I could send them a copy, if interested. Most often, I would have my lunch in the classroom with her - eating from my little red plaid lunchbox- sometimes buying a glass bottle of milk there for a penny! I walked to school, sometimes stopping along the way at the little store, Litwin's - at the corner of Crocker street. - their glass candy case was very inviting!! There was another store near that corner, but I can't recall the name of it - Does this jog anyone else's memories?? Linda

I clicked on this URL The Making of America database is at http://cdl.library.cornell.edu/moa/ Then found Judy's response, with a different URL (see her message). So, I went to both URL's and found that when I searched on one surname, I got different results. If I understand correctly, you should search both sites, as they have different books/works scanned. I apologize if I am stating the obvious to those of you who were aware of this project. 3. It is a very useful website. Because of Fultonhistory.com, I was able to make some family connections that I had always "knew" but was never able to "prove." And, the more interesting thing about that is, I found these missing pieces through old articles about my 4th great aunt's murder by her husband. It took a lot of time sifting through thousands of papers, reading every article about it, but each name mentioned, even in passing in these articles, lent another bread crumb to the path. And to think this guy makes no profit from this, and funds that site purely on donations. I've recommended it over and over again to people here on this board and even to some of my patients. It's has proven it'self a better resource than many of the pay ancestry sites. Happy Hunting, everyone.... 3. The point is not if someone enjoys a post or not. I have enjoyed some of the posts, but the point is this is a list on genealogy, and serious genealogists are going to be driven away because we have 15 messages in our mailbox about Sponge Candy, and another 25 regarding Beef on Weck. The topic of the list is not a democracy. The point in having list titles is so people can elect what they want to receive messages about. If you tell people you have a list for Erie County genealogy, and members have a mailbox full of messages on something else, naming the list is pointless. I don't mean to be rude, but this seems incredibly obvious. I sincerely value the posts I receive from many people on this list. 3. Don: Yes, this is excellent advice. I did something similar with my 101 year old grandmother and her brother, and as you say, it only makes you wish you had done more. At the risk of promoting Ancestry.com to much, they now permit you to upload videos attached to your people, and a system for recording phone interviews directly to the profiles. Kind of nifty. 3. Dear Laurie, Don't worry about it; no apology needed. <g> Everyone got so enthused about the Beef on Weck and related memories that it just grew and grew. And your queries about the Dames of Malta was right on topic, since it was about one of your relatives. You're right, that's how we learn. And frequently topics that start out directly related to genealogy take a spin and veer off into memory-land. This is fun; but at some point we need to veer back. Now, if someone had a relative who sold Beef-on-Wecks, or was tracing a supposed link to the supposed inventor, that would be on-topic <VBG>. Hilary
