My question is 'How many St. Francis Catholic Churches are there in Buffalo?' I'm trying to find the St. Francis Catholic Church located on River Road. Is this church closed? I believe I have some relatives buried there by the name of Barbara and Joseph Ailinger and would like to find out what the burial records/tombstones say about these two. Thanks for your help! Regarding the Erie County Real Property Tax Services website at: http://www.erie.gov/depts/finance/webprop/index.asp Does anyone know what is included in the database? I looked on the website for the answer without success. I am guessing that a description of the data collection process is published, but I couldn't find it. For example, I couldn't locate information on my parent's home in Williamsville/Clarence; they have lived at the address since 1957 and I know they pay taxes. :-) I couldn't find any addresses in West Seneca. What towns/villages are included in this database? How far back in history does the database go? Does this database supposedly include all property owners in present day Erie County? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Kate Where light snow is predicted today in Denver, but I saw crocus leaves poking out yesterday.
For what it's worth, the "Search all" drop-down menu tells you what towns are included. Also, the homepage tells you that the data is a subset of the NYS Real Property System. So you may have to jump up a governmental level to find out more about the database: http://www.orps.state.ny.us/ --- Kate Johnson <[email protected]> wrote: > Regarding the Erie County Real Property Tax Services website > at: > > http://www.erie.gov/depts/finance/webprop/index.asp > > Does anyone know what is included in the database? Here's the latest update from Concordia Cemetery: The cemetery achieved NY State landmark status of December 7, 2007. Please send your congrats to the board and volunteers who were instrumental in getting this designation. It should make the cemetery eligible for additional funds. Even so, the cemetery relies heavily on both volunteers and donations. The new year and new projects will begin at the end of April when the grounds are sufficiently dry and able to be walked upon. Mark you calendars for the THIRD SATURDAY of each month April through September. There's lots of great work to do on this wonderful old cemetery that houses the remains of some of our oldest ancestors. I am looking for the family of my great-grandmother, Mary Ida LEFFER/LEFFERS/LEFFLERS, b c1870. Mary married Ira Crocker Oct 9, 1888 in Williamsville, NY. The marriage certificate states "Mary Leffer of Buffalo, New York". Ira and Mary's children were born in Williamsville and they later moved to East Hamburg (Orchard Park) by 1900. Ira Bernard Crocker was b 1865 prob. Williamsville to Levi S. and Lucinda Crocker. A possible candidate for Mary's family is the Joseph Lefler/Leffler family of Amherst: Joseph b. c1835, Theosea/Clarissa b. c1843, Caroline b. c 1863, Edward b. c1865, Mary b. c1866, Henry b. 1869, George b. c1870, Michael b. c1872, Joseph b. c1877, Diana b. c1878, and Albert b 1879. I would appreciate any leads to finding Mary's family. Mary Kester Rude
Have you checked the LDS catalog? Most of the Buffalo Catholic church records have already been filmed. Aren't most (if not all) of the records from the churches of the Buffalo Catholic Diocese already filmed by LDS? Microfilms for every church that I have looked for have been onsite at the FHC in Amherst, NY. that's one thing i could not Find out , when Paderewski Street was changed from Lovejoy Street and Lovejoy Street other side of Bailey Ave changed to East Lovejoy St.. Then when i look at old maps .. looks like they had they wanted to combine the two sections , but the railroad was in the way ..I ran into that same problem years ago .. My Kin lived at 6 Longview Street off Northland Ave in 1900 census , no such address now .. so did they renumber or bulldoze everything to make a factory , .never did find a answer . i just wanted to take a pic of the house...My Mother told me a lot was changed at Broadway between Bailey & North Ogden .. several houses were moved to make way for the new viaduct , so many house where moved around on Gold & Davey Street to other streets ..Paul **************Ideas to please picky eaters. So, "1644 street name" became "1678 street >name", for example. > >You would have to know IF they changed, WHEN they changed and WHAT >the new numbers were. House numbers in the City of Buffalo have been remarkably stable, with a few exceptions. Main St. was renumbered some time in the mid-19th century. Elmwood Ave. was renumbered when it was extended south from Ferry St. to Allen. There are certainly a few others. The numbering algorithm is "increase by one every ten feet, measured from the beginning of the street." Of course the rub is "where does the street begin?" On most east-west streets the numbers begin at Main St., and increase in both directions. The singular exception is West Ferry St, which is numbered from the Niagara river. This numbering plan is extended into the suburbs in some, but not all towns. Back about in the 1970s there was a movement started by public safety people to have a consistent county-wide numbering system, similar to those in younger cities in the mid- and far- west. The plan was adopted by a few towns, but the idea never caught on elsewhere. For example, Transit Road has numbers differing by thousands on the east and west sides where it is the boundary between the Towns of Amherst and Clarence. Clarence adopted the new system; Amherst did not. Local government can sometimes be quite obtuse! Another thing to watch out for is street name changes. There have been many in Buffalo. Usually the numbers did not change, just the name. The Monroe Title Company has prepared a list of changes which is available in the Grosvenor Room at the central Buffalo library. I assume it may be available on-line somewhere, since I have a copy of it in my computer. George

It shows the house that I grew up in that I now live in again as 1960 when it was built in 1959. A friends house is listed as 1900 when it was built in 1890's. So i'm thinkin you're right about the ending in '0" thing. Why would they do that tho? **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. Because unlike other factors (lot size, for example), the precise year built is not essential information for tax collection purposes. So they aren't going to commit to the labor costs of locating building permits--which are distributed in how many village, town & city halls?--for every structure in Erie County. *:-.,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,_,.-:**:-.,_,.-* Cynthia Van Ness, MLS, bettybarcode AT yahoo DOT com http://www.BuffaloResearch.com "Everyone claims to want a city, but no one here wants city living. Best to approach the "date built" records in this database with a large dose of skepticism. According to this database, my house was built in 1910 but I have a copy of the 1896 building permit for it and the 1900 census showing the family who lived in it. Old houses across Buffalo are routinely dated as 1900 in this database, as if houses were rarely in built in any other year. I'd be interested to hear if anyone searching it gets a year built that doesn't end in zero, especially for houses built before the computer era. Our good civil servants may have just aimed for the approximate decade. --- D S <[email protected]> wrote: > Kate: > > I found the following information at the Erie County Real > Property Tax > > Services website > http://www.erie.gov/depts/finance/webprop/index.asp > > -->> Wow! Aaaahhh ... makes sense. If I'm used to town and county boundary changes, why not streets and house numbers. Once again, I say thank you.
