    2. Bill Wiler
    3. All, I asked this question before and I asked it incorrectly. The Weiler Family lived in Buffalo Ward 5 in 1860. Does anyone have any idea which Catholic Churches were in Ward 5 in 1860? Supposedly they owned a grocery store on Genesee Street. Was Genesee Street in Ward 5 after 1860. After 1860 they disappear as far as Censuses are concerned. Family lore says they lived there and my Grandfather was born there in 1882. I tried to get his birth cert from Erie County and they have no record. They spelled their name Weiler, Wiler, Wilder, Wheeler. Any ideas on how to unravel this mystery. Now that I am LCMS, I have become interested in the Lutheran and other Protestant churches of Buffalo. St. Andrew's had a lintel or cornerstone with the words "St. Andreas Evangelische" which is the name in German. Chances are the services were in German until WWI. St. Ann's school taught the kids from the same neighborhood in German around the turn of the century. Chances are good most of the neighborhood spoke German, which was why they all tended to live so close together for a few generations. That, and the lack of significant auto transportation and the lack of television to teach them English kept them close knit. But I digress. St. Andrew's lost it's steeple years ago. The church had been taken over by a black congregation and the name was changed. The steeple was beyond repair and removed. It once had been a tall spire with a cross. I used to have a picture of the steeple removal. I need to look and see if it is still on my computer. I wonder what the inside of St. Andrew's looked like. I was too young to walk down there. We left that neighborhood when my folks bought their first house. I was only two years old. I have not heard what happened to the church records, but you may want to check with any LCMS church in the Buffalo/Erie County area. I think the big LCMS church there is named Trintiy. 3. Just tossing in my two cents here. That address of Sherman and Pecknam is literally about 5 or six houses down from the address on Sherman where I was looking at those wonderful map books for my gr-grandparents while visting the BECPL. When I saw this conversation, I headed to my digital photos. I"d signed permission papers while at the library to photograph the page while there. Sure enough . .that church on the corner isn't St Andrews. It's St Andreas. (well - at least at the turn of the century it was) Happy hunting! Deb
