Hi Amy, Thanks for all that background. I'm much too far away to visit the Library. I'd love to take a research vacation some day and walk the streets and visit the libraries and cemeteries but it is too far for me to go for a quick visit. Maybe someday I will find someone who knows exactly where that illusive hospital was. Hi Diane, I think you are right. Lackawanna Steel was bought by Bethleham Steel a few years after that accident. I haven't heard the term Perry Projects before. Hi Amy, After reading this plus the other e-mail about the other person dying in the same type of accident we can see that this place was in dire need of a hospital. Now I start to wonder how many of the men that died or were hurt that my guncle may have known. Thank you for all your digging. I am certainly gaining some insight into what type of working environment these immigrants had. I live in Lackawanna also and have only ever heard that there was once a hospital on site, but never a name. I assumed it was just called the plant hospital. I'm using fultonhistory.com I did come across a newpaper article in the Buffalo Express saying that an accident victim was refused at Moses Taylor Hospital because he had not been injured at the plant. Yet there are other articles saying someone was injured at Ridge Rd. and Holland Ave and taken there. (1926) Someone injured in an auto accident on Lakeshore Road near Wanakah taken to Moses Taylor Hospital in Lackawnna (1925) Harry Dunlap of 699 Riley street injured when car he was riding in hit a pole at Bayview, taken to Moses Taylor Hospital(1924) Edward Collins, 65, of 223 Swan, died in Moses Taylor hospital after hit by a car on Hamburg Turnpike near the plant. (1924) And many, many more. There are lots of employment adds for orderlies and Maids at Moses Taylor Hospital, Lackawanna, NY. I have your answer. April 12, 1903 The Buffalo Illustrated Express. "One of the features of the Lackawanna Steel Company's plant that attests ( ? ) the breadth of view of those who have founded that institution is the Moses Taylor Hospital that has been designed for the benefit of employees of the plant. It will be a building 100 feet long, with wings running back 80 feet, and within it the best ideas as to modern hospital equipment will be employed." Lackawanna Steel Co.(Previously Lackawanna Iron and Steel Co. and later, Bethlehem Steel Corp.) came to the Stony Point/Limestone Hill area of West Seneca, NY(Now Lackawanna, NY) from Scranton, PA in 1899. The city is so named FOR the steel company. There WAS a hospital wholly connected with the Bethlehem(Lackawanna Steel) Co. It was probably located on the Plant grounds. OR it could have been located in "the first ward" which was a community built exclusively for the Steelworkers and their families. IF it was in the First Ward, I'm going to guess it was on Wilkesbarre in what was, more recently, the Erie. Co. Health Dept. Clinic building. But I think it makes more sense, considering the type of work, and thereby the type of emergencies, that it be closer to the Plant than that. Could it have been named Moses Taylor Hospital? Sure. Why not? Makes sense to me, The Co. having come from Scranton, PA. Could it have been widely unknown that it was called Moses Taylor Hospital? Sure. I would think it's official name could have have been only commonly known by those living/working in/around the plant. I think you could conclude then, the hospital he died in was the Steel Plant Hospital. If you live nearby, Go to the Lackawanna Branch Library on Ridge Rd. There is a Steel Plant museum in the basement. I guarantee that someone there will be able to tell you something, or will be able to put you in touch with someone who does. Good Luck. Lackawanna Steel Co changed it's name to Bethleham Steel abt 1923. At one time they employed abt 23,000 people. Most of it's gone (it's on Rte 5 in Lacawanna) but still has something going on in a couple buildings. They may have had other plants in Bethleham PA. Maybe they owned their own hospital or an annex of that hospital in tne plant. There are probably books on the history of the steel co. which might shed some light. Was the company Lackawanna Steal Co. or Lackawanna Steel Co.? Have you googled it? My husband is trying to locate his birth mother whom he has never seen. Since time is NOT on our side, we have been making yearly trips to the Buffalo area to search old records, etc. If living, she would be approximately 86 years of age. Since she was an ONLY child born to an ONLY child, we are having a hard time locating her....not to mention that finding an elderly woman can be like finding a needle in a haystack. Since she was mentally disabled, she lived with her mother and her mother's second husband after giving birth to my husband and placing him in Father Baker's home. That was about two months after she divorced his birth father. Long story, but his father eventually picked him up from Father Bakers at the age of 16 months, when he remarried and his new wife insisted on raising ALL of his children. The latest bit of information that we've received is that the state placed his birth mother in a nursing home when her mother died in 1988. She would have been about 66 at that time. Family information that were lucky enough to recently receive is that the nursing home could have been located at the corner of Main and Kensington in Buffalo. IF she was issued a Social Security card from the state, we don't know for sure what name she used...her maiden name, her married (& then divorced name), or if she might have assumed her step father's surname, since she lived with them for over 40 years. We have found evidence from searching city directories and censuses that she used several of these over the years. My question is, does anyone on this list recollect a nursing home in the general area of Main and Kensington in 1988? I'm aware that the Kensington Hwy was built and might have forced many businesses to relocate. I'm not certain of exactly when that occurred, though. We are originally from the western NY area (Lockport), but aren't very familiar with the Buffalo part of that area. If you might have a clue as to what nursing home might have been there, I would love to hear from you. Does anyone know if there is a mailing list for just nursing homes on Rootsweb? An excellent history of the church formerly at Broadway & Pine is at _http://buffalolore.buffalonet.org/StMaryR/stmary.htm_ (http://buffalolore.buffalonet.org/StMaryR/stmary.htm) The church closed in 1981 and burned down in 1986. The church records are available on microfilm through the LDS family history centers. Ted Hull In a message dated 4/30/2008 5:57:58 P.M. Thanks for the help Joann!
I found him in the Social Security Death Index. He was born 22 May 1926 and died 28 Sept. 2002. I couldn't find him in the 1930 census either. I found the following article by googling his name: West Nile Death Toll 124 The death toll from West Nile virus has risen to at least 124 in 2,477 cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. Michigan added five deaths to its total, bringing the state's death toll to 21 in 343 cases, second only to Illinois with 32 deaths in 583 cases. New York added a 76-year-old Buffalo man as its latest fatality, but that death had not yet been counted by the CDC. Marvin Epps died at Erie County Medical Center -- the first death from the mosquito-borne disease in Upstate New York. He became ill Sept. 11, thought he was suffering from the flu, and wasn't diagnosed with West Nile until last week. "By that time, Marvin was too far gone. This is a very savage disease," said Norman Hare, a friend of Epps's daughter. You could get a copy of his S.S. form by sending $27 to them. That should show his parents.
