It's above Central Park where the island starts to narrow between the Hudson and East Rivers. Remember "Swinging on Lenox Ave" which starts at the north end of Central Park and goes to about 145th St. The center of Harlem is around 125th St. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara de Mare" <barbarademare@yahoo.com> To: <nydutche@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 03, 2007 10:53 AM Subject: Re: [NYDUTCHE] Need to know what county Harlem is in. > No, it's in Manhattan which is New York County. > > Sam Ferguson <samf1@tlabwireless.net> wrote: As I recall, Harlem is in > the Bronx. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "pam holeton" > > To: > Sent: Saturday, November 03, 2007 8:41 AM > Subject: [NYDUTCHE] Need to know what county Harlem is in. > > >> Just starting this line, and Harlem, New York is the first clue, for now. >> >> >> ....you know you are addicted when you have traced your ancestral lines >> all the way back to Adam and Eve, have it fully documented, and still >> don't want to quit..... >> www.tribalpages.com/tribes/holeton >> Pam Holeton >> Piqua,Ohio >> Miami County >> www.findagrave.com >> currently working on Forest Hill cemetery(Piqua) Cedar hill >> cemetery(Piqua) Johnston cemeterys. >> >> >> >> >> __________________________________________________ >> Do You Yahoo!? >> Tired of spam? 3. As a matter of fact, it hasn't. It was originally a town settled by the Dutch and named New Harlem for the European City and with its own records and history. Many towns (Harlem, Brooklyn, Flatbush, Bushwick, etc.) were gradually absorbed as NYC grew. My point was that if an ancestor lived in Harlem in the 17th century, it was an independent municipality with its own records and history (See Riker's History of Harlem, available on Google Books) . Geographically, of course, it is located today in what is now the Borough of Manhattan. In my mind anyway, the original query did not specify a time period. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark" <markl8@optonline.net> To: <nydutche@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 04, 2007 9:06 PM Subject: Re: [NYDUTCHE] NYDUTCHE Digest, Vol 2, Issue 269 > Harlem has always been in Manhattan.
