I am interested in obtaining information on the on the Ancestors and Descendants of Daniel and Sally Lake who were residents of Charlotte in Chittenden, VT in 1839 when they provided an affidavit in support of Mary (Sherman) Perry/Soper's Widows pension based on the service of her second husband Edward Soper in the Rev. War. There were several Daniel Lakes in Dutchess and I am trying to determine just where Daniel and Sally Lake of Columbia County, NY and Chittenden, VT may fit in with the Lakes of Dutchess County. Also interested in the Maiden name of Daniel's wife Sally as I have a records of a Daniel and Sally Lines being the parents of a James Lake, the father of Andrew Lake, Civil War Veteran [1846-1911] of Pleasant Valley, NY. Any information on Daniel and Sally Lake of New Canaan, Columbia County, New York and Charlotte, Chittenden County, VT would be most appreciated. I have much information on the Lakes and am willing to share with other's who find this family of interest. I don't know where this particular Daniel and Sally Lake died but I am assuming quite possibly in Chittenden, VT unless in there old age and sometime after 1839 they returned to Dutchess County where some of their children or family may have resided at the time. ----------------------------- [Rev. Pension File W22278] State of Vermont Chittenden County ss: Daniel Lake & Sally Lake his wife of Charlotte in said County being sworn do respectively testify that they are acquainted with Mary Soper of Parishville in the County of St. Lawrence and State of New York, now widow of Edward Soper, deceased, that they both became first acquainted with the said Edward Soper and the said Mary at New Canaan, in the County of Columbia and the State of New York in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety three, that these deponents were then living at New Canaan and the said Edward and Mary removed into said town from Stephentown in the fall of the same year 1793 and lived in the neighborhood of these deponents, that the said Edward and Mary came there as husand and wife and lived together as such, these deponents then understood they had recently been married, that the said Edward had lost his former wife by whom he had several children and the said Mary had lost a former husband by whom she had two children, these deponents became well acquainted with the said Edward and Mary and their family and there was much familiarity between them, they well recollect that their own eldest child, a daughter Mary, was born on the 14th of May 1796, and that the next day after on the 15th of May 1796, the said Edward and Mary had a son Briggs S. Soper, who they believe is now living in Parishville aforesaid, and they further say they resided themselves in New Canaan until the year 1800 when they moved to Charlotte aforesaid where they have ever since resided, that the said Edward & Mary had another son, Edward Soper, before they left New Canaan from which place they removed to Charlotte about 2 years after these deponents did, and they resided within 40 or 50 rods of the house of these deponents for the span of about three years, during which time there was much familiarity between their families, the said Edward and Mary & family then removed from Charlotte to the town of Peru on the opposite side of Lake Champlain in the State of New YOrk about thirty miles from the residence of these deponents and lived there until the said Edward died which they believe was in the year 1813. All the while the said Edward lived at Peru these deponents were more or less acquainted with his family having frequently seen him and members of his family at the house in Charlotte, and the said Daniel Lake having been at his house in Peru frequently, and they would further say that during the whole of their acquaintance with the said Edward and Mary they always lived together as husband and wife, were publickly believed to have been lawfully married and these deponents never had any doubt of the fact, and they were always esteemed as notable and worthy people. The said Edward had several children by a former wife and the said Mary had two children by a former husband one Perry, as these deponents understood. After the death of the said Edward and after and about the year 1822 as they believe the said Mary moved from Peru to Parishville aforesaid to live with her said son Briggs S. Soper and has ever since lived with him as they understand and believe, and the said Daniel saith that he has called on the said Mary since she removed to Parishville aforesaid and they have frequently heard of the said Mary as living with the said Briggs S. Soper in Parishville and they believe she is still living there as the widow of the said Edward Soper. They further say that they always understood that said Soper was a revolutionary soldier and performed much service in the revolutionary Army.
