The Fire Caught in the southwest corner of the building - Origin Unknown - Loss about $$45,000 - covered by insurance - Wappinger Engine Arrives in Time to Save the Laundry. - - - - - A bright light illuminated the southern sky about 10 o'clock Sunday night, and it was reported that the fire was at the Gallaudet Home for the Deaf and Dumb, near New Hamburgh. Later, it was reported that the barns connected with the institution only were burned. But the fire was more serious, as it was not the barns, but the institution itself that was burned, and is now in ruins. From our correspondent at Wappingers Falls, we learned that the fire broke out in the southwest corner of the building, and made rapid headway. The firew as plainly visible at Wappingers Falls and this city. The unfortunate inmates of the home, twenty sis in number, were all safely gotten out of the burning building and conveyed to the farm house about a quarter of a mile away. Aid was sent for at Wappingers Falls and Garner steam fire engine went to the scene of the fire reaching there in time to play on and save the laundry, a brick building in the rear of the main structure. The main bui! lding was entirely consumed. The origin of the fire is unknown. The lost is estimated at $45,000 and is covered by insurance. The home was founded in 1885, and was a substantial brick and stone building, situated in the midst of a farm of 156 acres, extending from New Hamburgh road to the river. All the buildings were back from the road nearly a mile, and are at least two miles from Wappingers Falls. The Home was under the control of the Episcopal Church Mission for Deaf Mutes, and a great many Poughkeepsie people are interested in its work, and will regret its loss. About two years ago an addition was built on the Home at a cost of about $20,000. [Copyrighted Transcription by G.
