In the mid 1700's, my ancestor, Joseph Sherwood, lived in Oblong. He was a Pvt. in Capt. Uriah Drake's Company of Minute Men in Ulster County during the Rev. War. He died sometime after 1760. Do you know where I can locate Rev. War records listing his Regiment and the battles they fought? And, what town is Oblong now? Thank you for your assistance. meyberse@comcast.net
re Oblong: The Oblong is an area within Dutchess County, easily recognized in the map on our website, here <http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Enylnphs/V0/index.htm>. It forms the whole eastern edge of the county and was ceded (1731) to NY from CT in exchange for the SW peninsula of CT. -R. The best new resource for Revolutionary War Service Records and Pension Records is at Footnote. There is a very good explanation of their services here: http://ny-genes.blogspot.com/2008/02/free-data-at-footnote_11.html Footnote requires a subscription in order to download documents, but much of the site is totally free, and there is a Free Trial period if you follow the links from the above website at Upstate New York Genealogy Blog. Wishing you success. Dick Hillenbrand www.unyg.com On Feb 18, 2008 8:57 PM, meyberse <meyberse@comcast.net> wrote: > In the mid 1700's, my ancestor, Joseph Sherwood, lived in Oblong. Do a Google for "Oblong New York" (including Quotation marks). And visit here for a detailed history: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyputnam/history/chapVIII/index.htm Meanwhile -- the following extracts: ----------------------- When, however, it was discovered that such a line would deprive Connecticut of several towns which she had already established, an irregular boundary line was set in the southern end. To offset this advantage Connecticut ceded to New York an equivalent tract in the north, a tract known as "The Oblong," two miles in width and 50 in length, or 61,440 acres, extending from Ridgefield to the Massachusetts line, being given to New York. The agreement was not, however, confirmed by the two colonies... In 1700, however, King William the Third approved and confirmed the agreements of 1683 and 1684... ---------------------- In 1992 The Oblong Land Conservancy was formed by a group of Pawling area residents concerned about the negative effects of encroaching development. The future was clear: open space was rapidly disappearing along with 300 years of rural heritage and natural spaces. Once destroyed they will be gone forever. The Oblong Land Conservancy's focus of interest is Pawling and its environs located in the southeast corner of Dutchess county, New York, at the the borders of Putnam County and the state of Connecticut. It is an area rich in beautiful landscapes, clean water, large rural open spaces, extensive forests, working farms, and abundant plant and animal habitats. Our name "Oblong" is derived from the historic Oblong, a narrow 2 x 60 mile long tract of formerly disputed territory on the New York/Connecticut border. Pawling is recognized for its history, its unique ecological environments and for its natural beauty. Quakers were among the first to settle the area in the 1700's and in 1767, the first effective action against slavery in The New World, was taken by the Quakers in the Oblong Meeting House, erected in 1764. Pawling played a role in the revolutionary war; General George Washington and his Continental Army encamped here in the winter of 1767. ----------------------- Jim Groat | -----Original Message----- | From: nydutche-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nydutche-bounces@rootsweb.com] | On Behalf Of meyberse | Sent: Monday, February 18, 2008 7:57 PM | To: NYDUTCHE@rootsweb.com | Subject: [NYDUTCHE] Current Town Name | | In the mid 1700's, my ancestor, Joseph Sherwood, lived in Oblong. According to Ancestry records, he was in the Ulster 4th Reg. He rec'd Land Bounty Rights. There is another record of a Jos Sherwood, being in the Westchester 3rd Reg. That's all I could find with a quick search.
