According to my records, Joseph is the only name he used. His wife's name was Mary (last name unknown.) He is listed in "NY in the Revolution" by Berthold Fernow, pg. 265. He is also listed in the DAR Patriot Index, Centennial Edition, Parts 1 and III. I have a Supplemental Application to the DAR submitted in 1905 by Ella Sherwood Dyer that lists him as being in Capt. Uriah Drake's Co., Ulster Co., Militia. One of his sons, Nathan D. Sherwood was also a Pvt. in the war. He served in the 2nd NY Regiment under Phillip VanCortland and also in Col. Jacobus Swartout's Co. of Minute Men. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark F" <candoo@teksavvy.com> To: <nydutche@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 10:25 PM Subject: Re: [NYDUTCHE] Current Town Name > Marcia, > > Do you know if he went by another name? I found a pension record for a Nathan Sherwood (d. 1822) , husband (m. 1790) of Lucy (she died Feb 12, 1849). Their son John is filing for the pension in 1850, Genessee Co. The app is 16 pages. This Nathan served under Capt Courtland, 2nd Reg, as well as under others. The docs are very extensive with info of enlistment, campaigns, incl dates, etc, also inventory of his goods at death. Let me know if you want the pages. The images are originals, scanned in BW, which makes some hard to read, but legible. Ah, so. In that case, I think that I have found him. I should also mention that "Oblong" could be a reference to a particular Quaker organization, usually referred to as "Quaker Meeting". Rod Dav4is wrote: > Ah, so. Hi Marcia, Here is what if found in the book "Dutchess County, NY Tax Lists 1718-1787 by Clifford M. Buck with Rombout Precinct by William Willis Reese" edited by Arthur and Nancy Kelly, Kinship, Rhinebeck, NY, 1990, page 278, in the Southern Precinct: Sherwood/Shearwood: David on Caleb Sweets place; June 1761-1767 Joseph; Feb. 1759-1767 Joseph for Eagers farm; 1768-1771 to Philips On p. 267: Eager, farm Joseph Sherwood to 1768-1771 to Phillips Eager, John June 1759-1767 See map here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nylnphs/Images/L9P_MAP.GIF The Southern Precinct was at one time Putnam county and borders Westchester county, I would also try records in those counties. Also the Joseph Sherwood listed (on the website) as being born 16 May 1712 and died <1760> the Oblong, would be too old [or dead?] to serve in the Revolution but his son Joseph would not be. Here's a little tidbit I found at: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/dutchess/data/removals/remove103-108.htm Quaker Removals: Joseph Sherwood, from Ninepartners to Marlboro, 15 of 7m, 1824. I think Marlboro is Marlborough Monthly Meeting in Ulster County, New York. Hope this helps some.
