There were a number of Massachusetts residents who crossed into NY to be married by Justices of the Peace because they did not have to wait for the posting of banns. In one case that I know of, a daughter of a JOP was able to find a record of a marriage performed by her father to verify a marriage for a civil war pension but I do not know if those records found their way to a better repository.
