I have just received from the Amenia Historical Society a handwritten record prepared by my great aunt purportedly linking our Moyer family to the Winegars. Here's what she wrote: "1st gen - Uldrick Winegar and wife. 2nd gen - Capt Garret 3rd gen - Conrad (out of 14 children) 4th gen - daughter Catherine married Captain Colbe Chamberlain 5th gen - their daughter married John J. Hollister (1st postmaster of Amenia Union) 6th gen - Mary Hollister (my grandmother) married John Moyer" ......then she continues with my great-grandparents, etc. Here's the problem - she notes that "Catherine Hollister (wife of John J) died in 1816." Her grandmother Mary Jane Hollister was born in 1838. Did my great-aunt skip a generation? Or was she mistaken about the connection?
